“Why isn’t he getting out? He did this. What the hell is wrong with him, Stefan?”

He shakes his head and runs his fingers through his hair. I don’t think he even knows what the hell is going on with him. Something has to give.

I can hear the sirens a couple of blocks away and they would be here any minute. So, I walk over to his car, and pound on the window.

“Get out here, you coward. Come look at what you just did. The driver is hurt, and there are two kids inside. You could’ve killed them!”

I try to bring my anger down, but I can’t. These are my people, the very people I fight to protect every fucking day, and he is in Grapevine for two days and almost murders a family? Does he really not care about anyone else?

The ambulance is coming down the road, and I step away from the vehicle, as two squad cars are right behind them. I hope they put his ass in jail. Maybe it’s time he learns consequences. No amount of money can get him out of this predicament.

Stefan and I stand at the back of the van, waiting for the EMT’s to jump out so I can update them.

“Angela, what are you doing here?” the man asks, throwing the bag on his shoulder and following me to the van.

“We have a female driver, almost nonresponsive, and two children in the back.”

He starts examining her, and tries to get her to talk, but she is just sitting there.

“Ma’am, can you hear me? We are going to take you and your children to the hospital. Can you at least shake your head?”

She nods.

“Okay, good.”

Two more EMT’s come to the van with a stretcher and load her up on it, and Stefan and I help them with the kids.

“You don’t live around here, do you?” he asks.

“My brother is the other driver. Get them to the hospital. I think she has a concussion.”

He wastes no time after they are loaded up, taking off.

The police are questioning Hendrix, and I see actual tears in his eyes. I don’t know if it’s because he feels bad about what he did, or if he is scared. A man like him is used to getting what he wants, but the law is a different story.

One of the other officers comes over and asks to take our statement. Hendrix might be my brother, but I’m not lying to save his ass. His insurance will cover all of that families bills and then some. It’s the least he can do after acting like a fucking idiot.

“My brother was speeding and the woman backed out of her driveway, and we collided.”

“How fast was he going?”

“My guess is around fifty. I’m sure with the fancy ass car of his, you can get it off the computer inside.”

He nods, and writes that down in his notebook. “Anything else you can think of?”

Stefan is about fifty feet away from me, and giving his statement, but I know he is telling them the same thing as me. He wouldn’t lie to protect Hendrix. Especially, when a family is involved.

I go back to the car, not even making eye contact with my brother, and grab my purse.

“So, you tell them the truth?” I ask, linking up with Stefan.

He nods, but is pissy. “Do you know how bad this is going to look? If this ends up in the papers, our stock could go down. I told him to stop being like this, eventually it was going to cost us the company, and look at what he did.”

He’s fuming, but there’s nothing I can do. What’s done is done.

“Let the cops deal with him,” I say, walking toward his parent’s house. “We can’t hold his hand. He needs to learn the consequences.”

As much as I love my brother, this isn’t something I can condone. Stefan might be worried about their company, and rightfully so, because they could lose millions of dollars because of my brother’s foolish actions, but thankfully no TV stations have arrived on scene, so they might be safe.
