“I’m Tiffany. I really can’t thank you or your friend enough. Especially, with Christmas right around the corner.”
“Don’t you worry about it.”
She pushes the door open, and Jodi walks inside, taking in the living room and then runs to the back. “Mama, they are two bedrooms back here. We still get our own rooms.”
Her excitement is apparent, and she comes back out, jumping up and down. “This is a great place to spend Christmas, don’t you think, mom?”
Tiffany smiles and gives her a hug.
“I’m going to head out, but here is my number if you need anything from me.”
They are safe and warm inside that duplex and that’s all I could ask for. Thankfully, they had an open duplex for them, or they would have to stay at a shelter.
I get back in my car and drive a couple blocks over to my house. A nice warm bath and a glass of wine is exactly what I need right now. And maybe a couple episodes of Criminal Minds, because who doesn’t love Derek Morgan. He can call me baby girl anytime.
It doesn’t take long for me to be inside and on the couch. This is exactly where I’m going to spend the next few hours. I pick up the remote and turn on Criminal Minds and then go to the fridge to pour a glass of wine.
My phone vibrates against the coffee table, and I pick it up.
It’s a text from my brother letting me know he’ll be getting in tomorrow, but he’ll see me at dads.
It’s nice for him to finally reach out even though he hasn’t talked to me in months.
My focus goes back to Criminal Minds, gawking over Derek Morgan, and hope tomorrow goes okay. There is always a fight when Hendrix is around, and honestly, I’m over it. We are adults now, everybody get over your bullshit, and just enjoy the holiday. It’s all because my father wanted all of us to follow in his footsteps, and he still holds a grudge with my brother. Maybe this time will be different. Since Hendrix and Leslie both have chosen not to be firefighters, maybe he has thick skin about it now.
This year we are going to have a nice family Christmas dinner with no drama. Fingers crossed.
