Hendrix might not be so amicable once he finds out about Angela and I sleeping around. Am I worried? Not really. Our relationship is at its lowest point, and if he wants to be pissed about that, then so be it. I have bigger things to worry about.

After about twenty-five minutes, I pull into Grapevine Medical and find a parking spot. I text Leslie to let her know that I’ve arrived, and will need a family member to come out and escort me in. Hospitals typically only let family members in the room, but sometimes they will make an exception.

I walk across the parking lot, and through the double sliding doors, but I don’t see Leslie. She might not be checking her phone, and I don’t want to call her, so I approach the front desk.

“Hello, ma’am. I’m here to see Angela Haddon.”

She looks at me, and smiles. “And you are?”

“Stefan Valentino, her boyfriend.”

Her eyes scrunch. “Angela doesn’t have boyfriends.”

“She does now.”

Leslie comes around the corner and waves me over. “He’s okay.”

I side eye the nurse as I follow Leslie. “How is she?”

“Still no change. It’s been hours since she was brought in, but they are hopeful she will wake up.”

She opens the door, and Hendrix is sitting next to his sister, holding her hand. Most people wouldn’t be surprised by this between a brother and sister, but I am. He has never been like this with her, and maybe this shows he might actually turn over a new leaf.

Their parents are sitting off to the side, Mr. Haddon trying to console his wife, and everyone seems to be on edge. I have no idea what to do, but I go over and rub her cheek.

“I’m here, Angela. We all are. Fight for us, please.”

They all look at me, and then Hendrix stands up. “You are getting awfully touchy with my sister. What the hell are you doing?”

This isn’t the best time to tell them, not while she’s laying there in a coma. So, I just ignore him. He needs to calm down.

The door opens and a doctor comes in. “So, I have some good news. It appears from the last scan that the swelling has come down.”

“What does that mean?” Mr. Haddon asks.

“If she is going to wake up, it should be soon. The best thing you can do is talk to her right now and stay positive.”

The doctor leaves the room, and I take a seat next to Mr. Haddon. I can’t make him feel any better, but sometimes just having someone next to you can make a difference.

Leslie moves Hendrix out of the way. “Sis, I told you one of us was going to end up in a damn hospital because of that job. Why do you have to be the hero? Please don’t go. Don’t leave me stuck here with Hendrix by myself.”

He slaps her on the shoulder. “Hey!”

The soft voice is so low, it’s hard to understand what she is saying.

“Sis, say it again!” Leslie yells.

“I’d never do that,” she says, her eyes fluttering.

My heart drops and I want to run over and kiss her, tell her that I love her and always have, but not with her whole family around.

Everyone jumps up and runs to her side, and I just stand behind them, letting them have their moments with her.

“Is Stefan here?” she asks, and everyone turns around to look at me.

“Right here, Ange.”

“I know you’d come.”

They move out of the way as she reaches for me, and I put my hand in hers.

“I love you, Stefan. My brother and the company aside, it’s always been you.”

Hendrix’s face turns beet red, and stares at me.

“Ange, it’s me and you until the end. Who cares what anyone else thinks? I love you, too.”
