Something like heat flickers in his eyes, but it’s gone in an instant. “Do you know who I am, Miss Martin?”

“You mean, do I know what you could do to me?” I snap, crossing my arms and failing utterly from keeping the glare out of my eyes. “Maybe not, sir, but I do know that until right this second, you haven’t let me complete a single sentence without interrupting me. I know that you’re thinking only of yourself right now, bullying me into doing your bidding and completely ignoring what I might need.” I swallow, and my arms drop to my side. “So maybe I don’t know how far you’ll go to get what you want, but I do know that I don’t like being trampled on.”

He doesn’t say anything for a long moment, just stares at me in this interested way, like I’m some fascinating creature behaving in unpredictable and strange patterns. As if no one’s ever talked to him this way before.

And for all I know, maybe they haven’t. Which sort of makes me sad, for some reason.

“What do you need, Analina?”

I blink, and now I’m feeling unsure of myself as my adrenaline begins to stutter away. I look to the side. “I don't know. Nothing.”

“If I could give you something important, make one thing happen that you needed done, what would that be?”

Instantly, my mind jumps back home and I blurt the words out before I even think. “My family. I want to take my family to a better place, give them a better life.”

“Alright.”

Slowly, my gaze is drawn back to him and I sit down. “What?”

He hasn’t moved an inch, and yet somehow, he looks different. “Finish your term with me, give me your best work, and I will bring your family to Zvezden. I will provide them with a comfortable place to live on my planet.”

And I know, right then, that he’s got me.
