“Yes, yes,” I sigh, and I take the drink with a dismissive wave of my hand.

When I look back across at Miss Martin, she’s slowed her actions as Asili starts on a second slice of bread beside her, and she has that defiant spark in her eyes again as they flick between me and the maid. I find a little glimmer of anticipation bubble in my chest at the sight of it.

“Is there a problem, Miss Martin?”

When her gaze snaps back to mine momentarily, I think that she might give me the pleasure of her disapproval, but then her eyes slide down along my body, and the red in her cheeks deepen further as she looks to the ground. “No, sir.”

I take a sip of my kafe and make my way towards her. I should really leave now, but I don’t seem to be capable of resisting. “You seem a little more nervous than usual.”

She twitches slightly and turns towards the benchtop, lifting her cup and then placing it right back down again without taking a sip. “I…I don’t know…”

“If this is about last night…” Her cup clatters and nearly spills across the marble. I reach out a hand to steady her fingers against the porcelain. “Careful.”

She jerks back from my touch, nearly tipping the cup over once more in the process, and takes a step back, her eyes as wide as the saucer her kafe sits on. “Wh-what?”

“When you watched me undress.”

She chokes on nothing and stares at the ground, and I feel my eyebrows raise slightly. Why is she acting surprised? Is this not what occurred last night? “Did you forget already?”

“Asili, honey, go and get your bag ready in your room.” Her voice comes out a few octaves higher than usual, and my son happily grabs one more slice of bread from the tray before him and wanders out. When she rounds back towards me, her face is flicking through a multitude of emotions once more, too quick for me to interpret, and her eyes keep darting to the maids still occupying the kitchen with us.

“You’re making it sound like something it’s not!” she hisses, and I am both confused and amused to hear an undercurrent of annoyance to her tone.

“I’m sure I don’t know what you mean.”

“You make it sound like…like we were…” Her eyes continue to dart towards the maids, so I dismiss them with a quick gesture and lean a hip against the marble top, curious to see where this conversation will go.

“Like we were…?” I prompt.

“Like we were…doing something inappropriate.”

I stop to consider this for a moment, and the implication has a surprising allure to it. That Miss Martin and I would be behaving…inappropriately, as she so puts it. I find I like this idea.

“But we weren’t,” she continues in a decisive sort of way, as if to make sure that the last of the maids leaving the room would hear her. “It was an accident. I just saw you by accident as I walked past. We weren’t actually doing anything!”

I find my lips lifting at her vehemence, and I bring my cup up for a sip. “Would you rather that we were?”

She splutters once more, and her eyes make a somewhat suspicious dart to the side as if she wishes to hide the emotions shining through. Her cheeks redden further, and when she speaks, her voice comes out breathier. “I d-didn’t say that…”

I regard her quietly for a moment. The flush in her cheeks seems to have traveled across her throat as well, and her generous breasts are rising quickly with her accelerated breaths as she bites at her full bottom lip. There is something about the way she stands, a certain edge to her nerves, that makes me wonder what she is truly thinking.

I place my cup down on the bench and stand upright, facing her fully.

“Miss Martin,” I say softly, “did you like what you saw?”

She takes a sharp breath, and when her earthy green eyes crawl up to meet mine, I am sure that there is a flash of desire there before she darts her gaze away once more.

She really is quite a beautiful female. It’s a shame she hides it behind those formless clothes of hers. It’s as if she is entirely unaware of how very captivating she is.

I have spent my life surrounded by females who flaunt everything they have, who make their desires well known in an effort to capture my attention. And yet, this one seems to be doing everything she can to hide it from me.

I take half a step towards her, but she scuttles quickly back from me. Her fluctuating emotions are entirely fascinating, but it seems her nerves are getting the best of her, and I certainly wouldn’t wish to push her. So I relax back against the bench and pick up my kafe.

“You looked rather lovely yourself in that short shower robe,” I say. I take a deliberate sip of my drink as the image of her damp curls and shapely thighs flash through my mind’s eye. It was a shock to see her frozen in the hallway, her eyes glued to me as if she couldn’t pull them away, and I must admit thoughts of her passed through my mind several more times before I’d fallen asleep. “Perhaps I should impose a uniform for you.”

Satisfaction curls through me as I watch her nerves drain from her face, to be replaced with the lovely spark of her anger.

“What? Don’t you dare!”
