But my body instantly fires up.

Heat sizzles straight up my stomach and into every inch of me, the rushing flow of desire taking me by surprise. When my free hand snakes its way around his hips and I kiss him back, arching into him and letting out a breathy whimper, he presses his hips into me and I can feel himgetting hard against me.

With a low, growling noise he drops both his hands from me and yanks up the long material of my skirt, his body still pinning me to the wall. I gasp in surprise, but before I can even thinkabout how quickly everything’s progressing, he’s grabbing my ass in his palms and lifting me up as if I weigh nothing.

My legs wrap around him on pure instinct, my arms coming to clutch at his shoulders, and with just a few powerful strides he walks us across the room, sits me down on a desk, and with a clatter of random office supplies toppling off the table he goes right back to kissing mein a way that makes it pretty clear to me that I’ve never really been kissedbefore this very moment.

I gasp in a breath when he finally wretches his lips from mine and starts trailing them down along my throat.

“Vahadr,” I pant, my fingers slipping up into his hair and my thighs involuntarily squeezing around him, as his tongue darts over my skin. “Wh-what’s going on, is everything okay?

He lets out an angry puff of air and abruptly wraps his arm around me, tugging me even closer as he presses his face into my neck. “You know, I very much enjoy the sound of my name on your lips.”

The electric blue of his eyes seems to be shining brighter than usual, and I lift a hand to smooth back his thick silver hair. “What happened?”

He doesn’t respond right away, just watches me for a long moment, one hand gripping my hips and the other on my bare thigh. Then he takes a perfectly precise breath in, not too sharp and not too slow, and says in an entirely emotionless voice, “Nkina’s lawyers contacted me.”

“Oh.” And now that Asili’s ‘mother’ has been mentioned, a flash of my earlier unease kicks through me again. “What did they want?”

He doesn’t respond. In fact, it looks like he’s shutting down, packing himself away again, and I decide that it doesn’t matter right now. He can tell me what’s going on when he’s ready.

“Is there anything I can do to help?” I ask instead, as I press a light kiss to his lips.

But he’s already shaking his head, and he leans over to lay another soft kiss on me, too. “You are helping me now.”

“I mean, kissing isn’t really helping.”

His fingers trail up my bare thigh, bunching the material of my skirt a little further against my hips. “It most certainly is.”

“Vahadr, seriously, I can—”

“You can argue with me, yes,” he says, and he glances quickly at his wrist. “But you are already quite late for your classes, I believe?”

The rushing bubble of anxiety suddenly returns to me in full force, but just as I’m about to push him back and leap off the table, I stop myself.

Because although I don’t want to talk about it, although I could happily jump on the excuse to avoid this conversation again like I did when I brought home the over-extravagant necklace he’s now promised me he’ll donate to charity—I also know that we’re now beginning day three since I found out about Asili’s mother, and if I delay telling Vahadr about it any longer, it’s going to start getting harder for me to say. So just like last night, I take a breath and decide I’m going to just blurt it out.

“Listen, about Nkina—”

But Vahadr levels me with something of a glare. “No.”

I frown back. “What do’ you mean, no?You don’t even—”

He jerks me towards him with a hand curled around the back of my neck, and when he kisses me thoroughly, his tongue thrusting against mine firmly, the hand on my thigh snapping up to grab at my hips under my skirt, all rationality completely slips away from me, and for an endless few moments, I’m floating.

By the time he pulls away again, I’ve almost forgotten my own name.

“Th-that’s not fair…” I murmur, wondering when I’d wrapped my legs around his hips.

“We will talk over dinner tonight,” he says quietly, and his slips his fingers from the back of my head to brush over my cheek. “I don’t want to think about her any more right now.”

I let out a shaky sigh and look down. “Alright, tonight, then.”

I just hope I don’t chicken out before then.
