As if by some cue, we both begin walking once more.

“Vahadr,” Kyrin says in his quiet, gruff way after several moments pass. “If the political clout and wealth of the Lvezniks ally with the underground connections of the Kuznezhens…”

“There is no if about the matter.”

“Then Ezshov will be in a position to truly challenge your leadership. Especially if he can rile half the sphere up against you. These riots are no coincidence, and we both know how the people would suffer if Ezshov were to overthrow and gain rule. The orphan-siphoning ring would be the least of their problems.”

“Yes, and in the meantime, the Kuznezhens will be looking to even the number of missing family members between us, and my son is not here with me.”

Kyrin doesn’t reply, and we turn the corner leading us towards the large, bustling foyer of the building.

“I will, of course, be heading home immediately,” I say, resting my hand by habit against my rapier as we clip across the polished stone floors, “where I’ll be conducting all business for the foreseeable future with my son at my side at all times.”

“I’ll fetch Asili and Ana for you now,” Kyrin affirms, pushing the glass doors open with one hand as we step out into the sunshine. “And then I’ll deal with any Kuznezhen that might be a problem. I’ll have to go off-grid, but I’ll update you in three days.”

I stop him with a hand against his arm before we part ways, and we both stare at each other for a moment.

“I appreciate it, Kyrin,” I say, and he nods and lifts his own hand against my shoulder with a squeeze. Then we both turn and head in opposite directions.

My brother and I can be so emotional at times.
