He doesn’t say anything for a few moments, but I can’t bring myself to disconnect. So we both walk alongside one another, me in the fading darkness and Vahadr in the warm light of his hallways.

When he stops beside the painting outside Asili’s bedroom, he remains motionless, and Asili begins to stir against him.

“It still isn’t safe for you out there,” he murmurs, and he isn’t looking at the camera anymore. “At least let me assign a security detail on you as I did with my mother, so that you’ll be protected when you go.”

“Fine,” I snarl, and for some reason this is the point in which I’ve had enough. For some reason, suddenly, I don’t want to see his face anymore. “You’re going to do whatever you want, anyway. You always do.”

“Papa?” Asili mutters sleepily, and my finger pauses over the button to disconnect. “Where’s Ana?”

“I’m here,” I choke, and when he turns his head and his blue eyes squint at the camera, I almost unravel again. “I love you, honey.”

He nods and drops his head back to Vahadr’s shoulders. “Love you too.”

“Bye,” I whisper, and I switch off the call.

Halfway to the property gates, a sleek black hover-car pulls up beside me, and the passenger door opens. I get in without a word.

There’s a security guard in the command seat, but I don’t ask where I’m being taken. I’m sure Vahadr has a very expensive hotel in mind for me, one which he probably owns or something, and since I won’t get a choice about it anyway…

We pull out of the property and start weaving through the dark streets filled with lush trees and gated driveways. I envisage myself jumping right back out and just walking off, let the damn security guy follow me for all I care—but I don’t. And when we arrive at the predictably high-tier hotel, as expected, a room for me is already organized and paid for.

I don’t even shower when I head in. I just drop myself onto the bed, still feeling Vahadr’s fingers ghosting all over me, and cry myself to sleep.
