“Father, I’m bored now.”

“The question remains, however,” I say, placing a hand lightly on the back of my son’s head, “is where were you while he was wandering free?”

He swallows. “The nanny isn’t here today, your Great Eminence, I am unused to—”

“Syeshin,” I say bluntly, “how long ago did my family renounce the royal titles?”

“Near sixty years ago, your Supreme Highness,” he replies. “When your grandfather altered our glorious monarchy so that he might join as a board member of the United Galactic Federation before he was assassinated and your father inherited the title of President.”

“Father. Might we go home now?” Asili asks, tugging on my sleeve.

I stare at Syeshin. Does he not hear the direct contradiction of his own words, calling me a royal president?

“Papa!”

It annoys me, this blatant lack of intellect that many commoners have.

“This is boring, I’m leaving!”

I’m slightly startled when Asili pushes against my thigh, and I turn to him in surprise as he dashes off towards the trees, running parallel to the road.

The human female makes an alarmed noise as Asili rushes past her. “Um,” she says with a quaver, “should I…should someone go get him, or…?”

“Well?” I cut a sharp look to Syeshin. “Why are you still standing here?”

“Apologies, your Most Illustrious Excellence.” And with a quick bow, he darts off after my son.

“And you.” I turn back to the human, who looks bewildered. “Tell me why are you here, if not to abduct my son?”

“Oh!” She looks suddenly nervous, and I wonder at the speed with which she seems to pass through emotions. “I just finished classes and decided to go for a walk. I’m new here so—”

“Classes?” I say, and my gaze drops along her admittedly lovely curves of her figure to take in the faded colors of her outfit and threadbare quality of her shoes. There is only one university within walking distance from here. “You can afford tuition at MITL?”

She blinks, and then her eyes instantly flare with heat once more. I am almost dizzied by her array of facial displays. “I’m on a scholarship program,” she grinds out stiffly.

“So you are intelligent.” Again her expression flickers to something new, perhaps surprise. “And you have the initiative to help someone in need, even if the problem is not your own.”

Her sculpted brows draw together and she shifts her weight from one foot to the other. “I mean, I guess? Wait, what’s going on?”

“What is my title?” I ask her, and find myself disappointed when she replies with the ever common phrase.

“Wh-what?”

“My title, human. My role here on this planet; how would you address me?”

“Uh, it’s—you’re the president, so…Mr. President? Sir?”

“Hm.”

“Papa! I’m sick of this! I hate Syeshin, tell him to let go of me!”

My former assistant returns with Asili’s small wrist gripped tightly in his hand. When I open my palms towards them, Syeshin lets go, and my son runs straight towards me for one of his customary overly affectionate hugs around my waist.

I drop my hand to his pale hair once more as he presses his face against me.

“Syeshin, find out where this female lives and have her things moved into your quarters before the day is over. You may relocate into one of the guest rooms in the west wing until you find permanent lodgings, but I know your mother is in need, so you may prefer to move directly in with her.”

“Of course, I—” Syeshin is halfway through dialing out via his wrist com before he stops, his watery, lemon-yellow eyes making their way slowly up towards me. “Your…Royal Majesty, sir?”
