“You are, of course, fired,” I say.

“Wow, wow, hold on!” the human interjects suddenly. “What just happened?”

Syeshin slowly begins tapping against his coms once more with a quiet, “Of…course,” and I turn my son and I around and begin walking us towards our transport.

“Hold on!”

She bends to grab what I had assumed was a pile of trash on the floor, but turns out to be her bag, before pulling up ahead of me in a rush, walking backwards when I don’t slow my steps.

“Did you just try to hire me?” she says, her warm eyes wide and her face slack with shock.

“I did not try,” I reply evenly. “You are now my in-house personal assistant. You may have until this afternoon to get your affairs in order.”

“Father, I don’t want a new person in our house,” Asili huffs.

I offer him a small smile. “It is already done.”

“No—excuse me, no, it isn’t.I’m, uh, flattered, but I can’t accept.”

“Of course you can.”

“I refuse the offer!”

I slow my steps to a stop, Asili pausing by my side and looking up at me curiously.

The female’s brown hair wafts into a gentle mess around her face as she finishes running a hand through it, and she too stops, her expression flicking through so many different emotions I have given up trying to interpret them.

“Thank you for considering me,” she says a little breathlessly, nervously, when all I do is stare, “but I’ve just started my scholarship. They don’t allow for deferrals or part-time study on this program.”

I snap my fingers over my shoulder, and Syeshin appears instantly by my side.

“Your Emine—”

“Contact the Dean at Mikrovnozehl’s Institute for Technological Learning and inform her that this female will now be studying part-time due to her commitments with me. What is your name, by the way?”

“What?” The human pulls half a step back from me, looking incredulous. “Why would I tell you that?”

“Her name is Analina Martin of Earth-station Beta 012, your Gracious Royal Self, the only human female studying at our great technological institute of—”

“Yes, thank you, Syeshin.”

When her shocked expression begins to settle into anger once again, I find myself oddly drawn by it. She is openly defiant and unashamedly angry. At me.

Fascinating.

“Do you have any further objections?” I ask, feeling my lips twitch upwards. I will have her, despite what she might think this very moment.

“Yes,” she snaps. “I already have a job.”

Without taking my eyes off her, I flick my fingers at Syeshin once more.

“Yes, my Lord Ruler, I will inform her employers of her resignation immediately.”

Her eyes dart between me and my former assistant and her lips part, but no words come out. I take a step towards her. “I will match their pay. Anything else?”

“I’m telling you I don’t want to!” Her fingers are gripping tightly to the frayed strap of her bag, and she’s staring at me with a stunned sort of rage. “You can’t just do this!”

“Of course I can,” I say, and I take a casual step around her and signal towards my son. “Come, Asili, we will see Miss Martin again tonight over dinner.”
