Slow and tender, they rocked back and forth, mindful of one another’s injuries. While Alani wrapped her arms around his neck, pressing her large breasts against his chest, staying close and safe, Ivo kept one hand on her hip to watch his pace, while the other worked into her hair again.

Even though she smelled of dirt and danger, he still caught the essence of her natural scent. His inner bear craved that smell, the powerful desire to put a cub in her so overwhelming thanks to the animal within that Ivo gritted his teeth in concentration. No sense in rushing. Even with the world crashing down around them, with the rams on the move and Miguel gathering the clan, it all faded away with Alani in his arms.

“Ivo?” she whispered, her hot breath dancing across his lips. He groaned, loving the sound of his name on her tongue.

“Yeah?” What did she need? For him to go faster? Slower? Touch her aching little bud at the crest of her sex? He would do it all—anything—for her.

“Thank you for coming after me.”

When he met her gaze, he noticed her eyes shimmer in the sunlight. He kissed her before any of the tears could fall.

“Well, we haven’t quite got there yet,” he insisted cheekily, “but I promise I’ll let you go first.”

Her black brows furrowed for a moment, then lifted in realization as she laughed again, a sound that could lift his mood even on the darkest of days.

“You know what I mean,” she said, slowing the rise and fall of her body and clenching around him. A strangled growl worked its way up his throat, but he swallowed it, not wanting to ruin the moment. “You could have left me there with those awful—”

“Never,” he swore, holding her tighter and tilting her head so she could see the honesty in his eyes. “Alani, you are my fated mate. I will go to the ends of the Earth for you and your children. I swear it. If I could have ripped those fucking rams to pieces—"

She eased her rocking to a stop, placing a finger over his lips to silence him. “I don’t want that. I just want to be with you. Like this.”

His eyes closed as she leaned in and stole a kiss, encouraging her hips to move again. What began as sweetness and ease soon turned into a fiery passion, their lips and teeth and tongues gnashing together as the pressure started to rebuild, until she cried out and came undone in his arms—the most beautiful sight in the entire fucking universe.

He could watch her come over and over again, and if Ivo had his way, one day he would. Until then, he would settle for one, maybe two climaxes, just until he learned all the tricks to really make her writhe in heat.

As she draped her relaxing body over his, he finished, groaning against her neck as a sea of pleasure washed over him. They should have used a condom, but sometimes there wasn’t the time—and Ivo would love to have a cub with his fated mate.

After kissing lazily beneath the shade of the trees, birds chirping overhead, Ivo helped Alani to her feet and gathered her discarded clothes. Her cheeks flushed that adorable shade of red as she dressed, perhaps just realizing what they had done. From the look in her eyes, however, she didn’t regret it. Neither did Ivo, of course; he just didn’t want it to be over.

“I’m going to take you back to town,” he said as she buttoned up her pants. She looked up with a frown. “You’ll wait in your apartment until—”

“No.” Alani shook her head. “No, I’m going with you.”

“Alani—”

“I’m not leaving your side,” she told him, knotting her sweater around her hips and crossing her arms. The stance of the petulant teenager of her youth. That was a very difficult mind to change. Still, he didn’t want to risk another run-in with the rams that might put her in danger.

“It will be safer if you go—”

“I’m safest with you.”

“But—”

“And that’s the end of the discussion,” she stated.

Her frankness surprised him. Every time they saw one another, Alani grew bolder, surer of herself. That softness was still there that he loved about her, but it was obvious that no matter how quiet and thoughtful she might be, Alani wasn’t one to be pushed around by anyone—not even her fated mate. Ivo didn’t stand a chance.

His inner bear all but snorted at the thought.

“Now,” she said after a tense moment passed, where Ivo had debated whether he ought to keep her glued to his side or throw her over his shoulder and run her home, “where the heck is this cave?”
