He opened and closed his mouth, biting down hard enough to make his jaw muscles flicker and then managed a, “I was… moving some things around. So. I might have been a bit loud.”

Tanith’s eyes widened a fraction. Ivo Ames seldom ever admitted he was in the wrong—but given the way he was looking at Alani, she could hazard a guess as to why today was the day to do it.

“Okay, cool, no need to fight,” Tanith told them. “Ivo will promise to keep it down and Alani, you will promise not to bug him. The floors aren’t really thick here. There’s bound to be a bit of noise carrying through.”

Both of them muttered something along the lines of deal before Tanith turned Alani and headed for the stairwell.

“Hey, wait…” When both women turned around, Ivo was out in the hallway in all his shirtless glory. “Alani, did you, uh, maybe want to grab lunch or something?”

“No.” The woman’s face flushed a lovely shade of crimson as Ivo’s somewhat open expression hardened. “Uhm, no. Sorry. I’m working.”

And with that, she all but raced down the hall and disappeared. Tanith could hear the young woman’s footsteps pounding the stairs and placed her hands on her hips, her numerous bits of arm jewelry jingling together as she looked back at Ivo. He stood in the hallway a moment longer, the flickering light on the wall beside his door casting long shadows across his features, then stalked back inside.

Tanith flinched when his door slammed shut.
