Rufus grumbled. “I’m new around here, too, but you’re forgetting one thing. You gotta look at the sheer size difference. I mean, I’m a scrawny sort of human who shifts into an armadillo, while Luther is –”
“Wait,” Paulina hissed, throwing her hands up to silence the room. It took Espie about two seconds to clue in to what the she-coyote had noticed: the pups had gone silent.
And there was an unfamiliar scent coming from the bedroom.
Eyes wide, both women raced for the bedroom door and threw it open—only to find the strangest and most alarming standoff of all time inside the small room.
There was a polar bear in Espie’s room. Was the small space even big enough to house a polar bear? Espie blinked, her inner grizzly rumbling to life as Luther’s scent washed over her. However his scent was not the only one she smelled. Her inner beast switched from interested to defensive the second she realized what Luther was doing there.
“Paulina, get the kids out of here,” she ordered. “Take them to Miguel’s cabin right now.”
Teeth bared, a cougar sat on her bed, tail swishing back and forth, lips peeled back in a frightening snarl.
As soon as Paulina opened the door further, all three pups scrambled for an escape, whimpering as they ran. Espie shifted on the spot, immediately tearing right through her clothes without a care. Her racing heart slowed slightly once she was in bear form and she’d taken her place beside Luther.
Then, another unexpected visitor, a polar bear cub, met her eye. She looked over her shoulder at Paulina and growled, gesturing to it. Paulina clearly understood the message and hurried in to scoop the young one up. While the cougar snarled at her, both bears charged it the second it even thought of lunging toward either one of them.
Espie wasn’t worried. She knew her friends would get all the children out and take them to safety. She would worry later about why a polar bear cub was suddenly involved in the mix. Right then, in that moment, there were much bigger fish to fry.
