“And how do you know that?”

Espie threw her hands up in the air. “Because I just told you he’s my fated mate. My fated mate would never be a criminal.” Her words echoed through the surrounding woodlands, and she watched as Miguel finally took in her words. He scratched at the back of his head before sighing.

He looked at her sharply as the wind picked up all around them, a faint howl heard in the distance. “He’s your…?”

“Fated mate? Yeah. How about that? That’s why I know you’re wrong about him, brother. The universe wouldn’t send me someone who wasn’t the kind of person I would want.”

“Espie, sometimes an explanation like that just isn’t good enough.” He lifted a hand to quiet her when she sputtered, and Espie felt deflated. This was her big brother. He was supposed to be on her side – always. But today he wouldn’t even allow her to tell him what she’d came there for. She could stand there and spout off everything that Maria had dug up on Vesper, every cougar encounter she herself had endured, and even connected at least two known cougars to Vesper because they’d been seen giving out his flyers, but her brother wouldn’t hear the words.

“I can see that trying to reveal what’s really happening in Angel Fire right now is wasted on you, big brother,” she said instead. “I’m sorry that you would rather accuse an innocent man than actually do a bit more homework, but yes, I have mated with Luther. And I won’t apologize for it. When you’re ready to actually listen instead of insult, feel free to give me a call.”

She turned and stalked away as the wind continued to howl, its cries reaching their zenith as she passed into the line of trees. Her big brother – her alpha – did not follow.
