“Pretty much the fact that we followed one of his cougar shifters up to the mountain, eavesdropped on the bastards talking about how Vesper’s plotting revenge against people, and the cougar who jumped in my bedroom window just happened to be a flyer boy, too.”

Clive’s eyes bugged out a little. “And you told this to your brother?”

“I couldn’t,” Espie complained sullenly. “Every time I tried, he just wanted to pick on Luther. Look, the fact of the matter is, my mate hasn’t done anything wrong. Miguel and the others need to get over themselves and do something about the real threat to Angel Fire. Willard Vesper.”

“That’s—”

“There’s more,” Espie said. “Vesper’s been brewing some green stuff that masks the shifter scent from other shifters. I don’t know if it works for all shifters, or just for cougars. But I saw one of the cougars use it. I could smell that he was a shifter, but as soon as he sprayed that stuff on himself he smelled just like any other human. It was totally weird.”

“And you say that Luther saw this as well?”

“Yes, and then they chased us to the cave and my brother gave Luther a beat-down instead of helping us.”

“All right, then, Espie, I’m pretty sure your brother isn’t going to ignore me if I tell him about this,” said Clive. “What d’you say I set up a meeting? Maybe he’ll hear the evidence a little better if we have it up at the resort this time.”

Espie smiled. “That’s a great idea, Clive. Glad to have at least one authority figure on my side.”

The pair of them shook hands, and then Clive turned back to Maida with a smile. “Anything else you want to tell me, Maida? I need to put something into this report.”
