In an instant, Tanith fell out of her weird stupor at the realization that something was wrong with the kiln—it was overheating.

“Alani!”

“Oh my God!”

Both women rushed forward to correct the issue before something terrible happened. Tanith had sunk so much money into this place, and she wasn’t going to lose it because of a freakin’ kiln, of all things.

“I’m so absentminded. Oh, Tanith, I’m so sorry,” Alani fussed, and Tanith hushed her, insisting it was normal when working on an unfamiliar piece of equipment. All the feel-good vibes from Ursalina’s handshake were gone, but Tanith still felt a little lightheaded, like she was coming down from a really good high.

When they eventually got the kiln sorted and her gallery out of danger, Ursalina was gone. Espie was on her phone, hastily texting someone, and Tanith was more confused than ever.

“Does Ursalina’s skin emit a hallucinogenic drug or something?” she asked, eyebrows shooting up as both Alani and Espie exchanged looks. “Like…what the hell was that? Did you guys hear her talking?”

Espie gave a weak shrug. “Ursalina is…eccentric, but—”

“No.” Tanith snorted. “I’m eccentric. Ursalina is another creature entirely.”

Espie’s lip twitched slightly. “Another creature entirely. Well, that’s one way of putting it.”
