“Of course you did,” Brightmore answered. “Your curiosity always did outweigh your good sense.” Then his gaze flicked up to the rest of the group who’d assembled around them. “Rebecca and I are childhood friends and neighbors.”

Rebecca nodded. “In my defense, I quietly bury a great many of the stories surrounding Dillan.”

Alexi reached for her husband’s hand. “And we’re very grateful.”

Clara turned to Rebecca. “Forgive me, but that doesn’t explain why you look as though a slight breeze might knock you over.”

Rebecca drew a trembling breath. “I was sitting here waiting for you all to come out, and I swear to you that I saw a man from my past that I know to be dead.”

“What?” Clara gasped, her hand reaching for Rebecca’s as the woman went pale once again.

She clasped Rebecca’s fingers in her own, Brightmore taking Rebecca’s other hand. “Dillan,” the woman croaked. “I might be going mad, because I swear to you, I’ve seen a ghost…”
