This little guy was supposed to be waterproof, but apparently leaving it on the shower shelf for a few weeks did something to short circuit the insides.

Flipping the vibrating item around in my hands, I look for another way to turn it off. Except there isn’t one.

I thought it was great that the new generation of vibrators didn’t need batteries, just a tiny little port for charging. Except now I see the flaw. If your fancy, high-tech vibrator jumpstarts itself into sentiency there’s no way to kill it.

“What am I supposed to do now?”

I don’t know if I’m talking to myself, or to Little Vibey, but I seriously have no idea how to turn it off. I mean, I suppose I could smash it. But with what?

Briefly, I consider shoving it under the wheel of Axel’s car and driving over it, but there’s no way in hell I’m opening the garage door to do that. Plus, what if it splintered his tire? How would I possibly explain that?

The longer I stand here, the weirder I feel about holding the vibrating sex toy. It’s one thing to use it, but just standing here holding it feels extra vulgar.

“Think, Maddie!”

I glance at the sink, but water made it crazy already. Drowning might not work, and I don’t need to add electric shock to my night.

Biting my lip, I look down the hall towards the kitchen.

“I wonder…”

Chapter61

Axel

My tires screechas I take the corner too quickly. But I don’t bother braking, I just let the car correct itself, then depress the gas.

Maddie may have taken my favorite car, but it’s not the only fast vehicle I own. And taking the last turn onto Maddie’s street, I’m thankful for that fact. Because a drive that should take 25 minutes just took me 12.

Flying up her driveway, I slam my car into park, yank the key free, and let my long strides eat up the distance to the door.

There’re no emergency vehicles, or signs of disturbance, but that’s hardly a comfort. I heard her scream on the phone. I know something’s wrong.

“Maddie!” I shout her name even as I pound on her front door.

No answer.

No sign of movement.

I slam my fist harder against the wood.

This is unacceptable. I need to be able to get to her.

I bang against the door again.

I’mthis closeto breaking the window next to her front door when I hear the lock turn.

“Axel?” she asks, as though it’d possibly be anyone else.

Maddie opens the door and steps into the small gap she creates.

“Oh, hell no.” I wrap a hand around the back of her neck, firmly guiding her out of the way as I shove the door open.

“Axel! What are you doing?”

I wheel on her, “What am I doing? What the fuck are you doing? What happened?”

Her eyes are wide, but she doesn’t look hurt. And at first glance her house looks the same.
