He opened my door for me and we walked in; he shut it behind him. He kept his hand on the golden handle as if he was ready to bolt right out the door. “We should keep this our little secret.”

I swallowed. My earlier unspoken question seemed to be answered. We could not be friends. We were back to the feeder and the prince.

Not that he made me feel lesser, but I knew that whatever friendship had sparked between us was not something others would ever witness.

I nodded, acknowledging his comment. “Thank you again.” I smiled. “Did you need…” I bit my lip, knowing his answer would most likely be no. “Did you need to feed before you go?”

His eyes darkened and he closed them, inhaling slowly. He moved away from the door and stepped closer to me, bringing his hand slowly up to my neck. He rested it there, gently gripping the base of it.

“Tempting,” he murmured.

I shivered at his touch, but instead of leaning toward my neck, his head bent closer to mine. I watched as his face moved closer and closer, and his lips became so close that if I moved slightly, they’d be on me.

I inhaled sharply, by accident from anticipation.

It broke Noah’s movements and he immediately retreated back. He gave me a small smile.

“Goodnight, Cora.”

And just like that he was gone. I was alone again. This time almost getting used to the feeling of disappointment in my gut every time the prince left my company.
