That did it. The uproar at Noah’s comments sent the council members into a tizzy.

“Lock the gates.”

“Ban deliveries.”

“We need a new checkpoint established, and additional guards.”

Everyone spoke over one another and the suggestions seemed to be getting more and more severe as they hollered out what they thought was best.

A woman rose, and Noah addressed her directly. “Lady Challen?”

“There have been grave concerns that a spy has been placed here, Your Majesty. Even before this news.”

Noah scoffed. “Rumors of a spy, not concerns.”

“Given what you’ve just said—” She tried to continue, but Noah politely cut her off.

“Lady Challen, someone leaking information could be inadvertent. Going to the extremes of causing hysteria here by assuming a spy would be detrimental to everyone. We are meeting today to discuss our thoughts and what—”

The doors to the hall slammed open, echoing through the room as three guards ran in, practically breaking the doors down as they moved toward Noah.

“Your Majesty, my apologies for the interruption.”

Noah had risen from his chair, and the tension mounting at the haggard and frantic-looking guards was palatable.

“The king and queen have been attacked,” the guard said as he reached Noah’s side.

The prince grasped the man’s arm. “What happened?”

“We are still gathering details. They are safe and alive. The queen was injured, but she is well and their journey home has been continued.”

“Rumors and hearsay, young prince?” Lady Challen spoke up, sipping the goblet in front of her.

It seemed a callous remark toward Noah after learning his parents were just attacked, but the council now had a bigger issue.

The spy was no rumor.

“Triple the guards,” Noah barked out his command at the messenger, who nodded and took a step back from the prince.

“I assure you, Your Majesty, they’ll be arriving shortly and you can greet them yourself to speak with them.” The guard hesitated and Noah looked at him, raising an eyebrow in question at the man’s hesitation.

“Alert me when they arrive then,” Noah said. “We’ll have to cut this meeting short once they’ve returned—”

“I’m sorry, sir,” the guard interrupted, shuffling his feet. “That’s not the worst of it.”

“The worst of it? Our king and queen were attacked and injured. What else do you have for us?” Noah put one hand on his hip and leaned down on the table with the other.

The guard cleared his throat and my stomach clenched at what could be making a member of the royal guard this uncomfortable.

The guard in front of Noah took a slow breath and raised his chin, clearly preparing himself for what was coming next.

“Seelie has officially declared war on Unseelie.”

I stumbled back, leaning against the wall I was closest to. The council’s stoic faces said it all.

War.

“And their army has already begun marching over their lands.”
