“There is nothing to fear from this process. Many of you are wary since you haven’t been present for a situation like this before, but I can assure you this is not the first time I’ve witnessed questioning. We as staff have our ear to the ground and our guard appreciates that and comes to us for help. These are not interrogations as I’ve heard you all reference them.”

She cleared her throat and raised her chin, but the dark circles under her eyes betrayed her confident words. “When and if you are pulled in with our guards, be polite, speak truth. You have nothing to hide if you’ve done nothing wrong. And I know that none of you have. Are there any questions?”

“Where did the girls go that haven’t returned?” Nicole spoke up, sparking murmurs and a fury of anxiety that rode through the entire staff.

Ms. Trapsbury pursed her lips. “No one has disappeared. There have been two girls who are being asked further questions at the request of the guards. There is absolutely nothing to fear, and they are in good hands and being well taken care of.”

I could tell she was lying. There was a small twitch in the corner of her eye and she refused to even look at Nicole as she answered the question.

“The guards are here for the royal family's safety, fae safety, and ours,” she reiterated.

Her overly emphatic speech and nodding along gave away her unease. She didn’t trust the guards, but why?

“How much longer will this last?” a younger girl asked from across the room.

Ms. Trapsbury smiled at the girl, looking at her like she hadn’t looked at Nicole. “Not much longer, dear. They just want to make sure they cover the grounds, ask the appropriate questions, and then life will go back to normal.”

She nodded, again too anxious to convince.

Instead of encouraging, I found the whole show more disheartening. The few staff I knew had already been talked to at this point. With the guards continuing their questioning, there wouldn’t be anywhere to hide.

Which meant my time was coming.

And my experience with royal guards, or any guards beyond Captain Coltrain, had been less than stellar.

I closed my eyes and tried to keep my breath steady.

It was only a matter of time now before they’d come for me.
