“You’re going to dive in there completely blind and injured?” the large man said.

“It’s our best shot,” I answered.

Nicole took a step toward me. “It’s actually not our best shot. An injured human jumping who knows how far down into darkness is not a shot. It’s a suicide jump.”

“Nicole—”

“No, Cora. Someone else should step up. This is madness. It’s not safe. At best you’ll break something else, at worst you'll die.”

“Nicole,” I said again, this time forcefully enough so that she stopped talking. “Don’t scare everyone with that kind of talk,” I whispered.

“It’s not our job to take care of these other adults,” Nicole mumbled.

I scoffed. “No, it’s not. But if chaos breaks out in this confined space, and people fear for their lives, it’s going to be dangerous. And keeping everyone calm for as long as possible is all we have.”

“This is stupid. For the record,” she said.

I nudged into her shoulder before heading back toward the opening in front of us. “Noted.”

“Wish me luck,” I said to those close enough in the cell to hear it. Everyone was still fairly quiet, looking on in a sort of awestruck, terrified fascination.

“Fine,” Nicole huffed. “I’m going with you then.”

My eyes widened as she waved her hands at me, beckoning me to get on with it. “Crazies first.”

I chuckled and took a deep breath, looking into the black hole once more.

I sat down, inching my legs over the edge and balancing myself, bringing my wounded arm to my chest.

I closed my eyes and swung my feet a few times.

There really was nothing to go on here.

But I inched forward. “See you on the other side.”

With that, I pushed off the wall and fell, as my stomach lurched into my throat from the sensation of an all-out free fall.
