The guards, refused to obey the direct order from their prince. Their bodies moved effortlessly against him, but the strange looks on their faces showed that perhaps they were utterly confused as to why they were disobeying their prince.

Noah beat back the three guards that had pressed forward and kept him from us.

“Cora!” he shouted as he pushed toward me. My guards had moved far enough away that Noah got to me, shielding me and fighting off the ones that remained on their feet. He reached for me, but two guards tried to grab him.

“Look out!” I said, barely in time. Noah fought bravely but clearly was trying hard not to injure the guard severely.

But it wasn’t working.

He got close enough to me again. “Don’t give up. Fight them,” he shouted.

I turned, swinging my good arm out to try to reach for a weapon from the confused guards as they watched their own fighting their prince.

The guard snapped out of his confusion long enough to grab my arm and keep me from my prize.

Nicole grunted as she shoved into a few guards herself but was grabbed once more and held in position.

The executioner moved closer. But not to us, to Noah. It was more of a locker room fight than a deadly assault, since the guards weren’t injuring Noah.

But the executioner watched Noah’s fighting differently than the other guards.

I screamed and watched as he took his ax, twisting it in his hands and gripping it close to the head.

“Noah!” I shouted out, desperate to make sure he saw that whatever the executioner was doing was going to happen now.

Noah turned and followed my gaze. But it was too late.

I was too late in my warning.

The executioner slammed the base of the ax into the prince’s skull.

Everything went quiet as Noah fell to the courtyard ground.

“Your Majesty!” I called out again and again.

But he lay there motionless.

My avenging angel lay still on the ground as the crowd gathered. Their prince lay in the courtyard at their feet, and no one did anything to help.

“Noah,” I cried, softer. Knowing I shouldn’t be using his name but not caring.

But even that didn’t rile him. Or draw any recognition from him.

Noise faded until only the silence in my mind could be heard over the pounding of my heart in my chest.

Prince Noah was dead.
