I would be.

He'd been dragged away from his mate by the prince of another species and placed under guard. I doubted if he knew whether he would live to see another day or not.

I knew for a fact that he hadn't had any blood. He could only drink from his mate, and that was my father.

"Are you okay, Uncle?" I asked as I met his gaze.

Pierre bit his lip and nodded, not saying a word.

"Go wait by the elevator. I'll be right there." I waited until Pierre left the room before returning my attention to the prince. "Stay away from my family."

"René,gattino, I did not mean to anger you or harm your family in any way. I was merely trying to save you from heartache when I saw your father out with his lover."

What?

I must have been standing there with a stupid look on my face because the prince smiled and walked toward me with his hands held out to me.

"Gattino, mate, I was merely trying to save you, not bring you pain. If I messed up, you have my utmost apologies. That was never my intention."

I didn't know what to address first, that he kept calling me kitten or that he thought I would buy his smooth-talking apology.

Or that he thought I was his mate.

I knew he'd bitten me because I found the teeth marks on my shoulder when I had taken a shower last night after getting home. I didn't think that made us mates, especially considering I hadn't bitten him.

"I am not your mate." I could barely get the words out. There was a part of me that was thrilled by the prospect of belonging to this powerful man. There was another part that wanted to punch him right in his smug aristocratic face. "I never bit you."

The prince waved his hand dismissively. "A formality."

I cocked an eyebrow. "Not if I never bite you."

The smooth-talking confident look slid off his face. "You are my mate." He spoke as if it was set in stone, a foregone conclusion.

It wasn't.

I snorted. "You really think I would mate with someone who separated two of the three people I care about most in this world? You didn't even ensure that Pierre was able to feed. What? Were you planning on starving him to death to get rid of him?"

"I...uh..."

I doubted Prince Visconti had ever been spoken to the way I was speaking to him. I just couldn't seem to stop. He pissed me off.

"I've spent my entire life around people like you, people who believe they know what is best and never stop to think they might be wrong."

I curled my lip back in disgust as I looked the royal prince up and down, leaving him no doubt to how I felt. "I wouldn't mate you if you were the last man on earth."

He stiffened, his head rearing back. "I am Prince Alessandro Vitali. I am the—"

I rolled my eyes as I spun and started toward the door. I hated egotistical people, and the prince of the gryphons was more egotistical than most.

"You can't leave."

"Watch me," I called out over my shoulder.

"Don't you want your jacket?"

"Keep it. It's the only thing you'll ever get from me."

I continued out of the room until the prince's voice stopped me. "You can't leave," the prince said again. "I've already claimed you. I can't even be with another person."
