"No, sir. Whoever attacked him must have heard them breaking down the door because they were gone by the time Sato and the others got inside. Sato left one of the men behind to guard the scene until we can get there."

"Put Luca on it. Finding out who hurt my mate is his top priority."

Luca was my number one guy for investigations. Not only did he have the best nose for finding answers, he seemed to have a built in bullshit meter. He could almost always tell if someone was lying or not. That came in handy when I needed answers.

"What about Alpha Ramirez, sir?" Tashi asked.

"Fuck Alpha Ramirez," I snarled. "I want to know who hurt my mate."

That was all that mattered to me. Well, that and killing whoever did it. They would pay for every second of pain my mate went through.

I'd see to that personally.

It took ten minutes to get to the hospital, which was nine minutes and fifty-nine seconds too long. As soon as the SUV screeched to a stop, I opened the door and hopped out. I didn't even wait for Tashi or my other guards.

"Sir," Tashi called out. His steps were heavy and rapid behind me as I strode into the hospital through the emergency doors. "Sir, please wait until we secure the area."

"No!" I stormed up to the reception desk. "I received a call that my fiancé had been attacked and was being brought in here. His name is RenéCastellano."

The nurse flickered a glance in my direction before tapping away at her computer. "Yes, sir, Mr. Castellano was brought in five minutes ago. He's been taken back into an exam room and the doctor is seeing him now."

"I want to see him."

I don't know what the nurse saw on my face or what she heard in my words, but she pointed to the double doors behind her. "Room twelve."

"Thank you." It paid to be polite to the people that were treating René, even if my bigger concern was getting to him.I walked over and pushed through the double doors. "Find exam room twelve."

Two of the enforcers split up, one going down one corridor, the other one hurrying over to the nurses' station. I continued down the wide corridor, looking at the numbers over the doors.

"Sir!"

I glanced at my enforcer.

He motioned for me. "I found room twelve."

If I hurried across the floor at a slightly faster pace, who could blame me? My true mate was supposed to be in the room. I didn't knock. I pushed the door open and strode inside.

My heart instantly froze in my chest. My breath froze in my throat. My feet froze on the floor. Everything froze. I couldn't move a single muscle as I stared at the horror before me.

René looked like he'd been beat to shit. Large bruises darkened his perfect skin along the side of his face and his arms. Dried blood stuck to the soft curve of his cheekbone, trailing down from his hairline.

I shuddered to think what could be hiding under his clothes.

When René whimpered, I quickly moved to his side. I wanted to take his hand, but I was afraid to touch him. Instead, I leaned down close to his ear so I could whisper to him, "I'm here, René."

René jerked before his eyelashes fluttered and slowly lifted. He groaned when he saw me and then closed his eyes and turned his head away. "Oh, it's you."

Well, that wasn't the response I had expected. I decided to ignore that for now. "Who did this, René?"

René sighed heavily, the sound lifting his chest. "I don't know."

I did not like that response either.

"There was no one there by the time my men got to you. Do you have any idea who it might have been? Did you see anything? Hear anything? Is there some reason someone would attack you? Does anyone have a problem with you?"

René opened his eyes and turned to glare at me. "Just you."

I frowned as my head snapped back. "I didn't do this to you." The very idea was preposterous. "I would never harm you."
