"It's been...interesting. Busy, but interesting."

"Well, you are a prince, so..."

Alessandro grabbed his suit jacket and pulled it on before looking directly at me. "And you are now a prince's consort. How does that affect your well-lived life?"

"Who says it's going to?" I asked instead of giving into the shudder trying desperately to shake my body. "I didn't agree to be anyone's consort."

In fact, I couldn't think of anything I'd hate more. My life so didn't mesh well with being royalty.

"Just because you say you haven't agreed to it doesn't make it any less true," Alessandro said. "You are the royal consort of Prince Alessandro Vitali. You know it, and I know it."

I did, but that didn't mean I had to like it.

Before I could give the royal pain in my ass a snarky reply, I heard loud voices coming outside the exam room door. I was almost glad of the interruption.

"You'd better get that."

Alessandro huffed, which was not a good reaction in a prince, and then turned and walked over to yank the door open. "What in the bloody hell is going on out here?"

I recognized the guy in the SWAT gear, but not the one in the white doctor's coat. I assumed he was the doctor. Why else would he be wearing a doctor's coat?

"Sorry, sir," the guard said. "This man was demanding entrance."

"Are you the doctor?" Alessandro asked.

"Yes, and you're keeping me from my patient. If you don't move, I will be forced to call security."

"My apologies, Doctor." Alessandro stepped back, holding the door open. "Please, come in."

The doctor huffed rather loudly, clearly showing his displeasure, and walked into the room and over to the side of the bed. "Mr. Castellano?"

This was going to be so tedious.

"That's me."

The doctor started taking my vitals. "Can you tell me how this happened?"

"I was attacked," I said. "Someone was waiting for me in my loft, and they hit me over the head before I could stop them, and then proceeded to beat the crap out of me."

The doctor frowned before moving to the head of the bed where he could see that back of my scalp. "Yes, you do have a small laceration here, but luckily, it seems as if the bleeding has stopped. I still want to send you down for a CAT scan. I suspect you have a concussion, but I want to be sure there's no trauma to your brain."

Damn, that meant I was going to be here a while.

"Are there any other injuries?"

"My back." I turned and lifted my shirt. "Whoever did this hit me in the back several times."

"Yes, there's some bruising, but it doesn't seem too bad."

I hissed when he pressed his fingers against a particular tender part.

The doctor paused and glanced at me. "Does that hurt?"

Really?

"Yes, it hurts."

"Well, it doesn't look like anything is broken, but we'd better take some X-rays just to be sure."
