Who the fuck did this guy think he was?

I was so out of here.

I pressed my hands to Alessandro's shoulder and gave him a little push until he stepped back, and then I slid off the bed and started for the door.

"You can't leave!"

I'd reached the door before the doctor shouted, but I stopped and slowly turned toward him. "Why not?"

"Because that's not how things are done."

I snorted and turned to open the door. The man standing guard turned toward me when the door opened. I rolled my eyes when he looked beyond me before stepping aside.

If Alessandro thought I was going to spend the rest of my life waiting for permission from him before I did anything, he was in for a rude awakening. I didn't even wait for permission from my parents, and I actually liked them.

The jury was still out on the prince.

The doctor started shouting as I stormed out of the exam room. I heard Alessandro's sharp retort, but didn't actually hear the words. Whatever it was shut the doctor right up.

Man, I wish I had power like that.

I'd almost made it to the double doors leading out of the emergency room before Alessandro and his armed posse caught up with me. I ignored them all and kept walking right out of the emergency room and then the hospital.

I didn't even stop when I reached the parking lot or the two large black SUVs waiting there. I simply walked right past them and out onto the sidewalk.

"Are we walking somewhere?" Alessandro asked.

I snorted. "You can walk wherever you want to. I'm headed home."

"Wouldn't it be easier to take my car?"

"You don't have cars, Prince Vitali. You have armed tanks."

And good god, they were following us.

Granted, they were moving at a snail's pace, but both vehicles had left the parking lot and were currently cruising down the street right behind us.

I huffed when I heard a car honk and turned, waving my hand toward the two vehicles. "Can you tell them not to do that? They are holding up traffic."

"No, you are holding up traffic, my sweet." Alessandro gestured to the front vehicle. "If you would simply get in, we can be on our way, and then we can let all of these lovely people be on theirs."

Was he for real?

I spun and continued walking.

Alessandro's deep chuckle followed me.

Damn it.

I really liked that chuckle. It was all deep and rumbly and... Well, I really liked it.

Damn it.

After a time, my steps slowed and I was no longer storming down the sidewalk, but taking it slow and easy, checking out the windows of the shops I passed.

Alessandro kept pace with me, a couple of his men walking behind us. The rest of them were still following us in their SUVs. I expected the police to show up at any moment to give them a ticket for blocking traffic.

I stopped at one shop, drawn to the jewelry show off in the window. They were high-end pieces—no diamonds or other gems—but they were interesting just the same.
