"My father and mother are mates, but my father is a gryphon and my mother is a vampire. When their parents found out, they tried to keep them apart."

I snorted. "You wouldn't believe how many times I see that. The old ways were good back in theold days, but they don't work in today's age. People need to get into the current century."

"Luckily for me, it didn't work, or I wouldn't be here."

Lucky for me too then.

"After they defied their family, they lost contact with them for a while. I was born during that time. Fast forward a few years. I think I was about five years old when Uncle Pierre came into our lives."

"Is he really your uncle or...?"

"He is actually. He is my mother's twin. When Pierre met my father, they all realized that the Fates had messed up."

I frowned at the mere thought that the Fates could mess anything up.

René chuckled at the look on my face. "I could see where you are confused, but it's real simple. We think it's because they are twins that there was a mess-up. My father is Pierre's true mate, but he's my mother's mate."

Porca troia!

I stumbled to a stop as René's words hit me. I had separated true mates? No wonder René had been so upset with me. I would have been, too.

Man, I had a lot of apologizing to do.

"Pierre and your father are true mates?"

René nodded.

"But your father is mates with your mother?"

René nodded again.

"How could the Fates mess up like that?"

"None of us knows, but my parents and Pierre had many talks and they've made it work. My mother and father are best friends, my father is totally devoted to Pierre, and the three of them travel everywhere together."

"What about your mother? Doesn't she feel a little left out?"

"Turns out my mother is a lesbian so being mated to my father, a man, didn't do it for her. She did her duty and gave birth to me, but now she just dates and has affairs, hoping that one day she will meet her true mate."

"Your mother is a lesbian?"

René grinned as he nodded yet again. "Trippy, right?"

"No, no, after everything you've told me, that actually makes sense. Maybe that was Fate's way of making up for their blunder. If she had truly been in love with your father, it would have messed things up for all of them."

"Huh, I never thought of that."

I shrugged and started walking again. "Do they speak with their families now?"

René snorted. "Only when forced to."

There was a story there, but I felt as if I should leave it for another day. There had been enough information overload today. I was still reeling, and I imagined I would be for quite awhile.

I also realized that I had royally fucked up and I needed to fix that. "How do I get your parents and Pierre to forgive me for what I did?"

I wasn't reassured when René snorted again.
