Alessandro's arm tightened around me. "Our worlds will mesh."

He sounded like he was positive of that fact. I wasn't so sure, but I was willing to give it a shot. Like Alessandro said, I only got one mate. If I gave him up, I'd never get another one.

I wasn't ready to do that.

Chapter Eleven

~ Alessandro ~

I kept a firm hold on René's waist when the large industrial elevator reached his floor. I expected a few of my enforcers to be there, but I was surprised to see Luca. I was under the impression he was off searching leads as to who had attacked my mate.

"Luca, what have you found?"

"Prince Vitali." Luca's sharp assessing eyes flickered to René.

"This is my mate and royal consort, René Castellano. He's the one that was attacked."

Luca gave a quick bow of his head. "Consort René."

"René, please," René requested. "I still haven't agreed to the whole consort thing."

Luca's gaze shot back to me.

I simply shrugged. "We're discussing it."

I couldn't say René didn't have valid concerns, because he did. I just refused to let them keep me from claiming my true mate.

"What have you found out?" I asked.

"Yes, well." Luca offered René a small smile, which was rare for him. He usually didn't smile at all. I called that a win. "There was no sign of your attacker inside the apartment even though we know he was here, but there were signs of someone breaking in through the fire escape."

Luca led us over to the fire escape window where I could see a clear set of handprints in a sprinkling of powder.

"Can you get fingerprints off these?"

"No, whoever it was wore gloves, but I might be able to match the fibers we collected to their gloves, assuming we find them."

Damn.

"Finding the person that attacked my mate is your first and only priority right now." I didn't want this person walking around free when they might still be a threat to René.

"It could have been a simple robbery, you know," René said. "Things like that do happen in this neighborhood, and it's not like the authorities spend a lot of time down here. In fact, if you really want information, I'd talk to some of the locals."

Luca's eyebrows lifted for a moment before he quickly pulled out a small handheld tablet. "Do you have anyone specific in mind?"

"Try Mr. Sanderson down at the corner market. He usually has a good bead on what is going on in the neighborhood. If there are signs of any other robberies in the area, he'd know."

Luca quickly tapped that out on his tablet. "Anyone else?"

René shrugged. "If I wanted information, I'd hang out at the park in the middle of the square. People go there and gossip all the time. Granted, not all of your information may be accurate, and you're bound to hear some things that will curl your hair, but it might give you a clue or two."

"I'll do that, thank you." Luca placed his tablet back into the inner pocket of his jacket. "If you can think of anything else, please let me know."

"Alessandro did tell you I saw blond hair right before the lights went out, right?"

"Uh, no."

"Yeah, when I got beamed over the head, I dropped to the floor and this guy started wailing on me pretty hard. I saw a flash of blond hair right before I passed out." René shrugged. "Not sure if that's going to do you any good, but..."
