"Until the next time someone decides to mess with us."

I wish I could argue with René, but I couldn't.

"Until then," I admitted. "But it's not all horrible. I'm planning that party for your parents, remember?"

A slight smile curved up the corners of René's lips. "Let's hope it works."

"It will."

"And if it doesn't?" René asked.

"Then it will at least give your parents and Pierre some insulation. No one would dare say anything to them if they had the backing of not only me but Prince Visconti."

"You're assuming he agrees with this."

"True, but I think he will. From what I've heard, he's a pretty nice guy."

For a human.

That was one I hadn't gotten used to yet. I didn't have anything against humans just like I didn't have anything against vampires. I thought the stereotypes about different species were stupid.

Unfortunately, not everyone thought the way I did. René's family was a perfect example of people that didn't think the races should mix. It was stupid. We were stronger together than we were apart, especially in this day and age of cameras and instant online video.

"It's better to be prepared, René. It's too dangerous not to be."

Experience had taught me that.

Chapter Twelve

~ René ~

It had been dark when we left my loft, but it was even darker when we pulled up in front of Alessandro's hotel. The moon hung high in the sky, and I wanted to pause for a moment and look at it, but Alessandro ushered me up the front steps and inside the massive luxury hotel.

I knew of this place. My parents had stayed here once when they came to visit me. It was a nice place if you liked living in an elite fishbowl.

Speaking of elite fishbowls, I could feel the stares of those in the lobby as we passed them. As I had learned to do with my parents, I kept my head held high and ignored them all.

They weren't worth my acknowledgement.

I did smile at the woman behind the counter, though.

"Mr. Castellano, are you back to stay with us?"

I nodded my head toward Alessandro. "I'm visiting with a friend, Teresa."

Teresa smiled back. "It's good to have you back, sir."

"How is that adorable daughter of yours?"

"Oh, she's getting so big. She started kindergarten this year."

"That's wonderful. Make sure you tell her hi for me."

"I will." The smile on Teresa's face wavered a bit when she turned to look at Alessandro. "Good evening, Mr. Vitali."

"Teresa, is it?" Alessandro asked.

"Yes, sir."
