"What?"

"I have clearly stated that I do not answer to you and that I do not have time to deal with you today, and yet you insist that whatever petty crap is going on in your life is more important than anything else I could be doing, and that I owe my existence to you so I must listen to you. Why is that?"

"I am Alpha Ramirez."

"And?" Alessandro asked. "Is that supposed to mean something to me?"

As confident as I was in my own ability to defend myself, I still took a step closer to Alessandro when Alpha Ramirez leveled his angry narrowed eyes in my direction.

"This is all your fault."

The alpha took a threatening step toward me.

My eyes rounded when I felt thick furred arm wrap around me from behind and heard a low, thick growl. It rumbled through the chest pressed up against my back.

"Be very careful, Alpha Ramirez," Alessandro warned. "Touch a hair on my mate's head and it will be the last thing you ever do."

Alpha Ramirez's eyes narrowed. The hateful glint in them promised retribution. Without saying another word, he spun and stormed back into the elevator, his bodyguard quickly following after him.

I breathed a sigh of relief when the elevator doors slid closed. "That man wants to remove my head from my body."

I got the attitude. In my experience, most people in power had it. And I understood why he was upset with Alessandro. He thought the prince of gryphons owed him simply because he was an alpha.

I did not understand why the guy hated me so much except for the fact that I had stood up to him. Maybe he thought I was one of the servants or something?

Granted, that still wasn't a good enough reason to be rude to someone or to hate someone, but people like him usually considered servants beneath them.

Idiot.

I'd take a hard-working blue collar worker over someone like him any day of the week. At least they were honest about the work they did.

"This is what you have to deal with on a daily basis?" I asked as I turned to look at Alessandro.

"No, this kind of situation is actually pretty unusual." Alessandro frowned. "Although, I have had to deal with two asshole alphas in the last couple of days, so..."

My eyebrows lifted. "Two?"

"Ramirez and another alpha named Santos. He's the one I told you about, the one that wanted me to fund his cushy lifestyle."

"The one with the clan that needs to go to work?"

Alessandro nodded. "Normally, I deal with easier situations, ones where there was a possible exposure to humans or someone had a complaint about someone else, etc. Not this crazy-ass shit."

Crazy-ass shit was right. These people were insane.

Chapter Fifteen

~ Alessandro ~

I was pissed. The last twenty-four hours was not helping to convince my mate to stay with me. Yes, he had accepted my claim and even claimed me in return, but that didn't mean he would stick around.

It certainly didn't mean he would be happy if he did, and that might be what pissed me off the most. I wanted René to want to stay with me. I didn't want him to stay because he felt compelled to.

"Come on, let's head back out to the veranda. I want to talk to your parents a little bit more about what happened when Pierre got taken. Something about that whole situation bothers me."

"Yeah, Uncle Pierre got taken."

"No, it's that they thought it was my men doing it. Why would they think that?"
