"Report."
"Everything is good here, sir," Sisko replied.
"No unusual activity?"
"No, sir. We doubled the guard as you ordered, but everything has been quiet here."
"As I ordered?" I hadn't spoken to Sisko in days. I certainly hadn't ordered him to double the guard. "Did I say why I had doubled the guard?"
"No, sir, but I assumed it was to keep your mate safe."
"My mate." I felt a cold chill go down my back. I did not like where this conversation was going. "And where is my mate currently?"
I heard a gasp behind me, but I ignored it.
"I'm not in the house at the moment. I'm patrolling the grounds, but I assume he is in your suite, sir."
"Go check. I'll wait."
"Yes, sir."
I pressed my phone against my chest as looked at Tashi. "Call the airport and get my jet ready. We're leaving immediately."
"Of course, sir, but—"
"We're headed home."
"Yes, sir."
Tashi started to turn to leave the veranda when I called him back. "And Tashi?"
"Sir?"
"Not one word of this to anyone, not even our security at home."
I didn't know if our communications had been tampered with or if secrets were being spilled or what, but someone was playing a very dangerous game.
"Yes, sir."
"Send Paolo to me."
Tashi nodded and walked back inside the suite.
I lifted the phone back to my ear. "Well?"
"I'm almost there, sir," Sisko replied. I heard a door open and close and then Sisko said, "He's here, sir."
That's what I was afraid of.
"Listen to me very carefully, Sisko. Your life depends on it."
There was a tremble in Sisko's voice when he asked, "Sir?"
"You are to get a unit of guards and you are to surround that room. I want no one in and no one out. Hell, I don't even want anyone leaving or entering the entire estate. I am on my way. You tell no one. Do you understand?"
There was a thread of fear in Sisko's voice when he replied, "Yes, sir."
"I want you to personally guard that man. If anything happens to him, I will not only execute you, but I will banish every member of your family. Do you understand me?"
