As soon as the hole was big enough, I stepped sideways and slid into the panic room. I rushed over to René's side and dropped down beside him. "René,gattino."

His eyelids fluttered and then slowly lifted. His eyes were glazed as if he was barely conscious. He was way too pale. My jaw clenched when I saw the red spreading all over the front of his shirt.

"Alessandro," he whispered.

I grabbed his hand between mine.

"He needs your blood, Alessandro," my father said. "Right away. It's the only thing that can save him."

Those words struck a chord in me, especially when I remembered how the panic room door wouldn't open. I seriously don't think I was supposed to get into the panic room and save René.

I sat down on my butt so I could cradle René in my arms. I bit into my wrist and brought it up to his mouth. It took a moment, but I breathed a sigh of relief when his fangs slide into my flesh.

I felt the draws of blood leaving my body, each one growing stronger until René finally extracted his fangs and licked at my bite wound. When he leaned his head back, he was still a little pale but there was more color in his face.

"Hey,gattino."

"Hey," René whispered back.

"Are you feeling better?"

René smiled weakly. "I'm getting there."

Armando lifted the cloth he held against René's shoulder. "He's healing, Alessandro. A couple of more hours and he should be fine."

"What about you?" I asked as I looked at Armando. He'd been shot, too.

Armando smiled as he glanced at Pierre. "I'm fine."

"Why is someone doing this, Alessandro?" René asked.

"I'm not sure I truly understand, but the guy that shot through the window said they wouldn't allow me to mate with a vampire." My nostrils flared with renewed rage. "He called you an abomination."

René gasped. "This is because of me?"

"No." I snorted. "This is because there is some idiot out there that thinks they have a right to say what happens in my life."

"But who's doing this, Alessandro?"

I shook my head. "I don't know."

But I had a few ideas.

"Can you get up,gattino?"

"With some help."

I stood and then helped René to his feet. Then, I reached out a hand to Alessandro and pulled him up.

The man chuckled as he glanced around. "You did quite a number on this thing. Guess these safe rooms aren't so safe after all."

René's eyes rounded. "I thought these things were supposed to be impenetrable."

My brow flickered as the clues started to come together in my mind. I still didn't know who was behind this for sure, but I was getting a pretty good idea of what they were trying to do.

"I think it was supposed to be," I said slowly.

Armando nodded as if he understood, but René gave me a contemplative look. "What are you thinking?"
