I am Rehan. I am king. I am gentle. I am strength and integrity. I am Rehan. I am Rehan.

Then she slipped. She could still see Rehan from where she stood, but her mind… her mind was with his. She could feel the way he felt, the nervous patter of his heartbeat, each slow carefully calculated breath, and the way he stiffened as if he noticed her presence inside his head.

Then there were…other thoughts. They weren’t Rehan’s. They were distant. Angry.

Where did they go? Where would he take them? Scent points toward Marlux.

Fucking warlocks.

We’ll find him soon enough.

Ace retracted. Inhaling, she swayed as her mind settled back within her. Rehan turned to look at her, he lifted a brow.

“What?” Margo whispered.

“The scent isn’t far ahead. Do you think you could confirm if it was your brother if we get you close enough? There are Fae surrounding it,” Rehan said

A small nod. Confirmation enough.

Blinking through the thinning fog, they took careful steps forward. They looked for clearings to settle their feet into to avoid unwanted noise. Ace could see Fae moving not far ahead. Snippets of conversation could be caught between the sound of her pulse thrumming within her ears.

Fingers tugged at her sleeve. Ace looked down, meeting Margo’s questioning gaze.

“I can go ahead on my own. I can get closer without being noticed.”

“No,” Ace hissed through her teeth. “I’m not letting you do that.”

“You’re not letting me do anything.” Margo waved a hand.

Cold as ice, Ace’s body froze behind another tree. Her muscles stiffened. Her eyes frantic and wide as she watched Margo whisper, “I’m sorry,” before she darted off on silent steps. Rehan turned back to Ace as Margo went by.

“By the gods.” He pinched his brow.

Stop her! Stop her!Ace tried to yell through my thoughts.

Rehan sighed. “I can’t. It will be too obvious. All we can do is wait.”

Idalia

“I want a guard on this door at all times. No one enters this room unless I command it.” Idalia snapped at a guard who’d waited in the hall for her. He dipped his chin murmuring “Yes, Your Majesty,” in confirmation before she was satisfied.

“She looks terrible,” Burke said, following her down the hall.

“Is this real concern? You don’t need to pretend when it’s just the two of us.”

Every movement he made felt careful at her side. Well trained to hide any sort of emotions he might have.

Something dark ignited low in her belly. It simmered, filling her up as it roared to a boil. In his silence, blood was pooling in her cheeks, warming her chest and neck.

Was this jealousy? Idalia stomped that idea out as quickly as it came. She was above such things.

“You care for your sister.” His tone was measured. “So, I feel as if I must care for her at some level as well.”

They took a turn and then another without speaking a word as the queen contemplated his response. How she might respond.

“Did you miss her? While she was away?” the queen asked before they rounded another corner, well on their way toward her chamber.

“I did not think of her once.”
