I risk leaning in and kissing her cheek. She jolts, but I smile to ease her nerves.

“You got it. I’m going to shower.”

“Okay,” she says, staring at me like I’ve grown two heads.

How can she be confused after last night? We definitely need to have a conversation. I take a quick shower and get dressed. Sage is sitting on the edge of the bed, her phone in one hand and her coffee in the other, when I walk out of the bathroom.

“That was fast,” she glances up at me.

“No time to waste.” I serve myself a cup of black coffee and sit beside her.

“Did you have fun last night?”

“I did. It was such a great wedding.” She smiles over at me, placing her phone on the bed beside her.

“It was. I could’ve done without a couple of things,” I say.

Her hand lands on my knee. I stare at it as her touch burns through me.

“The thing with your parents—you did what you could. I’ll never tell you what to do when it comes to them, but it was honorable of you to include Hudson, even if it didn’t work out the way you hoped.” She gives me a sad smile.

“I know.” I reach for her hand and lock our fingers together. “Last night was perfect.” I search her eyes.

She’s looking at me with a serious expression. I take a deep breath, ready to put it all out there for her.

“I—“ My phone rings, cutting me off. “You’ve got to be kidding me.

Sage giggles and releases my hand. “Go answer it.”

I stand and grab my phone, answering when I see it’s Hudson. I already spoke to Lex, so I don’t understand why he has to interrupt me.

“Hello?” I bite out.

“Oh, grouchy. Hey.”

“What’s up?” I shift on my feet, willing him to hurry up.

“Is breakfast still good?”

“Yeah, I already spoke to Lex when I ran into her downstairs.”

“Oh. She’s in the shower, and I just woke up.” He clears his voice and sighs. “Great, so we’ll see you soon.”

“Yeah, we’ll meet downstairs.”

“Okay. Go drink coffee or something to put you in a better mood,” he jokes.

“I’m in a fine mood.” I roll my eyes, smiling apologetically at Sage.

She waves me off and laughs.

I hang up and sit back down beside her.

“Sorry, that was Hudson confirming breakfast. I was saying that last night was special. Not because of the wedding but because you were there with me.” I reach for her hand again and look into her eyes so she can see the sincerity in them.

“Sage, I like you. For real, not because I have to pretend to. I kissed you because I feel more for you. I don’t go around kissing random women, despite what you may think.”

“I don’t—“
