My shoulders sag. Tristan’s life could take many different directions, and some options don’t include me in it. Maybe we should’ve stuck to the plan, kept our distance, and left things uncomplicated.

Stop being a negative Nancy. You’re Wise Sage.

“I’ll let you know what The Mill says.”

“Sounds good.”

I walk out of the office and freeze. My eyes widen when I see Tristan a few feet away. He narrows his eyes, glancing between me and Hudson’s office behind me.

“Uh, hey.” He scratches the side of his head.

“Hi,” I squeak.

Goodness, Sage, control the guilty look.

“What are you doing?” He tilts his head.

“Nothing,” I shake mine, too fast of a reaction to seem convincing. “I wanted to ask Hudson something.”

“What did you have to ask him that you couldn’t ask me?” His eyebrows pull tight together.

“Oh, nothing,” I wave a hand and say the first thing that comes to mind. “I had a question about real estate in town.”

“Really?” His eyebrows lift. “Are you planning on moving to your own place?” I understand the confusion marring his features. I’ve never even brought that up before.

“I mean, not right now, but you can never be too prepared. Besides, with the side job Elizabeth gave me for the website, it could help me financially.”

Stop talking, Sage.

“Anyway, dinner?” I smile awkwardly.

“Are you sure you’re okay?” He looks at me as if I’ve grown two heads.

I’m sure I look like a nervous mess at the moment.

“Positive. Let’s go eat. I’m hungry.” I pull his arm and lead the way with no real direction.

“Hold on.” He digs his heels into the ground and forces me to stop.

“What?” I look back at him.

“Where’s the fire? How about hello, Tristan? I missed you so much. I’m so happy to see you.” He crosses his arms.

I smile, walking toward him and stopping mere inches from him.

“Are you feeling left out?” I pout.

“Yes,” he says firmly. “You didn’t even smile when you saw me. What is up with that? I’m the best. You should be happy to see me.”

“Always so humble.” I roll my eyes.

His face splits into a smile before he laughs. “I missed you.”

His arms wrap around me in a hug as he kisses the top of my head.

“I missed you, too. I’ve gotten way too used to seeing you at work.” I jab his chest.

“So the key to this relationship is to not show up at the coffee shop for a few days to make you miss me. Got it.”
