“Yes,” I nod. “I could use a pick me up.

“Me too,” she sighs. “Hudson has an open house today, and we agreed to have a late lunch after, so I need something to hold me over until then.” She pats her stomach, and it growls in complaint.

“I know,” she says to it. “I’m feeding you soon.”

I can’t help but laugh.

“My stomach has a mind of its own, and it’s always willing to embarrass me.” She shakes her head, walking toward The Bean.

Her posture is always on point, something I’m sure she developed from being a dancer.

Lex is great. I can see myself having a real friendship with her. I guess it’s a good thing because if things with Tristan progress into serious-land, we’d be in-laws.

With coffees and a muffin each, we sit at a table. The warm drink and sugar will help me clear my mind and focus on the good, even if it is decaf. I tell her about my idea for decorating the room for the party.

“I think it’s great. The banner will be perfect, and who doesn’t love balloons?”

“What’s Tristan’s favorite color? I just realized I don’t know.” I frown, wracking my brain for the information but coming up empty.

“He’s an odd one when it comes to colors. His favorite color is yellow. Who even likes yellow?” Lex shakes her head.

“Really?” I scrunch up my nose. “How am I supposed to decorate with yellow?” I grab my phone and open my Pinterest app, looking for ideas.

“You could do a mustard or gold tone.”

“Yeah,” I nod, scrolling. “Oh, I like this.” I turn my phone over to her so she can see the huge balloon arch behind the cake table and the happy birthday sign.

“That’s beautiful.”

“Obviously, it won’t be all that.” I wave my hand over the screen, but I like the burgundy with gold that’s pictured.

Planning a party like this in such a short time is a lot of work. Thankfully, balloons and a birthday banner are easy to find. When I go to the party store, I’ll see what else they have.

The door swings open, and an angry Mrs. Remington walks in.

Oh, boy.

What is up with her today? Lex turns to see who walked in and looks back at me with an eye roll.

“There you are.” Her angry voice startles me.

What’s more confusing is that she’s staring at me.

My eyes widen as I stare at Mrs. Remington approaching our table.

“I knew I shouldn’t have trusted you.” She points at me.

I look at Lex, who furrows her eyebrows.

“Uh, what?” Panic sets in.

Did she find out Tristan and I lied to her?

“You’re using my son for his money, aren’t you? You knew he was up to receive some money and seduced him.”
