“I’m so sorry. I have no idea.” It’s a white lie.

I know why Mrs. Remington said I lied about my degree, but she’s delusional to come up with the whole gold-digging story when she’s the one who refuses to give Tristan his trust fund.

“I’ll leave. If you don’t want me to return to work, I understand.” I shake my head.

After the scandal in front of the customers, I won’t be surprised if Elizabeth kicks me out for good.

“This is not your fault,” she says.

If she only knew . . .

A desperate girl makes bad decisions. Am I a gold-digger for accepting money from Tristan in order to date him and get his parents on board with transferring his trust fund? Maybe I am.

“I need to go. I-I . . .” My hands tremble.

“Come on. I’ll walk with you.” Lex stands, taking my arm.

Once we’re outside and fresh air hits my face, I feel my eyes sting. If his parents use this against him, I’ll never forgive myself. I refuse for his parents to punish him because of me, even if their logic is all wrong.

If I can help it, nothing will keep him from gaining access to that money.

“Talk to me. What in the world is going on?” Lex seethes.

I shake my head, leaning against my car. I’m emotionally spent.

“Sage.” She reaches for my hands and removes them from my face.

I keep my eyes squeezed.

“If you don’t tell me, I’m going to call Tristan.” She’s standing cross-armed when I blink my eyes open.

“Don’t, please.” I’m sure he’ll eventually hear about the confrontation, but I need to think. “It’s true that I don’t have my degree, but I’m not with Tristan because I want his money.” I shake my head.

Not entirely true.

Shut up, subconscious.

“So you don’t have a college degree. Who cares? Why’d you tell them you did?” Lex shrugs.

It’s no big deal to her. She’s successful in her own right without one.

How do I tell her without being disloyal to Tristan? This would be easier if he told his brother and Lex about our plan.

“I heard how tough his parents were, and I didn’t correct them when they made the assumption. I was a year and a half shy of graduating, and it’s true I studied STEM in high school and am knowledgeable in the topic. I just don’t have the paper that says I’m a graduate.”

“Oh, Sage,” Lex sighs. “Never pretend to be someone you aren’t to please others.” She frowns sympathetically. “You’re amazing without needing to pretend.”

“I don’t know about that. If his parents decide not to give Tristan his trust fund because of me, I’ll never forgive myself. I know how badly he needs it.” I look away.

I was supposed to be the reason he would get it, not the other way around.

“Besides, it wasn’t my choice to leave school. I couldn’t help it that I got sick.” My nostrils flare as another bout of anger rushes through me.

The audacity of that woman calling my university and buying private information.

“I agree. Honestly, Mrs. Remington will find any reason to hate someone who isn’t on her social level. I’m surprised she took this long to find any info on you.” Her lips press into a straight line.

“Yeah, so I’ve heard,” I sigh.
