“What?” Hudson asks angrily.

My eyes snap to them upon hearing Hudson’s tone. Lex is chewing her lip, and Hudson is staring at her wide-eyed.

“Tell him.” He points to me.

She frowns and stands.

“Tristan, I’m guessing Sage didn’t tell you.”

“Tell me what?” I cross my arms.

“We had a run-in with your mom yesterday. I thought she’d tell you. Your mom accused Sage of lying about her college degree and being a gold-digger, only being with you for the money you’re supposed to inherit.”

“What?” I growl.

Lex jumps back, eyes wide. Anger pulses through me. If I find out my mom had anything to do with this, we’re done. Forever.

“She came into The Bean while we were having coffee and started yelling at her and throwing out accusations. It was ridiculous. It’s clear Sage cares about you.” She shakes her head.

Our lie came back to bite me. And the pain is poisonous as it travels to my heart.

“Yeah, she broke up with me. She said we’d both be better off on our own.” I shake my head.

“No way.”

“Yeah. If this is my mom’s doing . . .” My words trail off.

“Don’t react. Think clearly,” Lex advises.

“No, you don’t understand.”

“Actually, little brother, I do.” Hudson stands and walks to Lex, wrapping his arm around her.

I look between them and sigh.

“I guess you do.”

“I don’t get why Sage would lie about her degree, though. She said it was so your parents would like her more.” Lex’s eyebrows furrow.

I take a deep breath and stare at my brother and Lex. “You don’t know the whole story.”

It’s time I come clean with them like I should’ve done from the beginning.

Tristan

After confessing everything to Hudson and Lex, who stared at me wide-eyed and speechless, I grabbed Hudson’s car keys.

“What are you doing?” He finally speaks.

“Paying Mom and Dad a visit.”

“No,” Lex says, shaking her head. “I don’t think it’s a good idea, Tristan.”

“I don’t care.”

Anger pulses through me that they’ve ruined this for me. That despite me putting distance between us, they continue to try to dictate my life. All because I came back home to get my money.
