“Good. I wouldn’t want her to pay for all this. Thank you.” I wrap my arm around Lex and give her a side-hug.

Hope surges inside of me, knowing Sage went through all this trouble. Planning a party isn’t an easy feat. She did it because she wanted me to have an amazing birthday.

But I won’t.

Not unless she’s with me.

“I’ll be back.” I look over at her.

“Where are you going?” She furrows her eyebrows.

“I need to take care of something.”

She arches a brow and smirks knowingly.

Suddenly, I need to see her. I have to talk to her. Now. It can’t wait any longer.

“What’s going on?” Hudson approaches us.

“I need your keys.” I reach my hand out.

“For what?” Hudson eyes me skeptically.

“Come on.” I hurry him up with my hand.

“I’ll be back before you cut the cake,” I say.

“Give him the car keys.” Lex jabs his ribs with her elbow.

“Fine, but be back soon,” he huffs, fishing them out of his pocket.

“By the way, she’s back at work already,” Lex spills.

As I rush out, Lex calls out, “Go get ’em, tiger!”

My heart pounds the closer I get to The Bean. Knowing she’s back at work puts me at ease.

I need to talk to her and make her see that she’s what I want, for richer or poorer. Nothing matters if she’s not by my side. Not where I live, what I do, or how much money I have.

She snuck into my life and my heart, taking over without me even realizing it. Every thought, decision, and smile revolves around my Wise Sage. I can’t envision my life without her, and I don’t want to.

I pull up near the coffee shop, take a deep breath, and step out. My hands tremble as I think of all the different scenarios that could play out.

Shaking my head, I scrub my face and eyes.

Get on with it.

I hope The Bean is empty, or I’m about to give its customers a show. Hopefully, she doesn’t turn me down, and I become pitied by all of them.

The only thing worse would be getting rejected after proposing, and an entire restaurant is watching.

I have no plan in place, which makes me even more nervous. All I know is that I need to do this now.

When I walk into the coffee shop, my heart drops. Julie smiles tentatively from behind the counter, but Sage is not here.

“Hey . . .” She turns her head and looks at me.

“Hey, is Sage here?”
