I smirk before answering.

“One that involves spending our lives together, supporting one another through each win and loss, and creating our dreams from the ground up. A deal filled with love and honesty.”

Her eyes widen, and her full lips part. I want to taste them to seal this deal with a kiss, but first, I need her to respond.

She doesn’t say anything, making my hand shake as I keep it stretched between us.

“What do you say?” I ask nervously.

A slow smile creeps on her face. She looks at my hand and back at me.

“That a deal like this isn’t sealed with a handshake.” She fists my shirt and pulls me toward her, pressing her lips to mine.

“You read my mind,” I murmur against her lips.

Everything falls into place again as I wrap my arms around her and kiss her back. The life I thought I wanted has definitely transformed into something unimaginable. I never thought meeting the barista at The Bean and making a deal with her would change me and my path. And I’m so happy it did.

Sage leans back and smiles. “Are you sure?”

“I’ve never been more sure in my life. You give me purpose. I love you, Sage. I’m utterly in love with you.”

She bites her lips as tears fill her eyes and trail down her cheeks.

“Don’t cry, babe.” I wipe the tears.

“I love you, too.” She sniffles and hides her face in my chest. “Head over heels bent over backwards in love. Bent over backwards in love should be a thing. Like so in love that it’s got you all twisty like a pretzel yoga pose or something.”

I laugh and hold her tightly as people in the coffee shop start to clap. Sage laughs against me, and I smile like a fool.

“Your party.” She looks up at me with wide eyes as if it just dawned on her.

“I can’t enjoy it without the mastermind who planned it. Come with me.”

“I need to finish working.” She frowns.

“Oh, go with him. I’ll close up,” Julie calls out.

“I’ve missed too many days already.” Sage turns around and looks at her.

“When a man comes in here proclaiming his love to me, then you can stay and work while I run off with him.” She smiles and winks at me.

I chuckle and tighten my arms around Sage.

“What do you say, Wise Sage? Wanna come with me?”

“Thank you.” Sage looks at Julie and then smiles up at me.

Her entire face is lit with happiness. Unable to stop myself, I hold her face and kiss her hard and fast.

“Come on.” She blushes and grabs my hand.

The crushing pressure I had in my chest has been lifted. I’m dragging her to the car when she pulls back, resisting me. I turn to look at her with raised eyebrows, wondering what’s stopping her.

“What?” I lift my free hand.

A slow smile creeps up her face as she walks to me, closing the gap and holding my face in her hands.

“Happy birthday.”
