When I walk out of the kitchen, Tristan is staring at his laptop with an adorably confused expression. His eyes snap up to mine, and I can see complete and utter shock mixed with anger. That adorable expression turns into fury. I wordlessly inch toward him until I’m right in front of him, the counter dividing us.

“What’s wrong?” I ask slowly.

He turns his laptop around and shows me the screen. A brand new donation. What makes my heart stop is the amount.

“Wh-what . . .” I shake my head, my hand flinging in front of me. “What is that? I mean, I know what it is, but who donated two million dollars? Oh, my . . .” I can’t even think properly.

“Anonymous, but I know who it was.”

I widen my eyes and wave my hand to rush him along. He can’t leave me on slow motion without answers. I’m going to go insane. That’s more money than I’ll ever see in my lifetime.

“It’s the same amount as what’s in my trust fund.” He stares at me.

“Come again?” My eyebrows lift, and I blink rapidly.

I bet someone could record me and make me into a confused GIF right now. This moment will be forever on the internet.

Around Tristan, I could be the face of many GIFs.

“That’s the amount.”

“No wonder you could offer me a hundred grand without blinking. What in the world, Tristan?”

I look around apologetically when he shushes me. Customers look at us with furrowed brows, and Julie is staring like I’ve lost my mind. I’m pretty sure I have.

“What?” He lifts his hands.

“That’s a lot more money than I thought. But wait . . .”

My mind is starting to work properly, and a smile creeps up my lips.

“You have the capital now!”

I round the counter and hug him. He’s still frozen, arms to his side.

“You have the money you need now to get the ball rolling.” I shake him.

“I hate how they did it. Some of that money would have been for personal use like to buy a house.”

I lean back and cup his cheek.

“Hey, babe, you’ll have time for that. You’re only twenty-five. A house will come.”

He wraps his arms around me tightly. “But a house now means I could have you all to myself sooner.” His lips peck mine.

I smile and sigh, staring into his eyes. “You will always have me. We have all the time in the world to be together. We can take each step when we’re ready.”

“I know,” he nods. “So I keep the donation?”

“Are you really going to reject it when you can use it to help people sooner?” I tilt my head.

“You’re right.” He sighs, releasing me and turning back to his laptop. “This is a lot of money.”

“You don’t say, Sherlock.” I widen my eyes.

“Sherlock?” He chuckles. “You’re cute. You should’ve taken the day off so we could play hooky and go to the river.”

“No, sirree. I need to work, and you have a successful non-profit to run.” I kiss his cheek.
