“Yeah, of course.”

“Don’t get me wrong. He might be onto us soon, but I’ll tell him when the time is right.”

“You’re the boss,” I say.

“You’re the one who bossed everyone around with your straight talk about bioengineered crops.” He shakes his head.

“I was just speaking my opinion. Science is great. I love it and believe in it, but that doesn’t mean everything should be embraced without considering the ethical implications.”

“That makes sense.”

“Exactly.” I smile.

His phone rings through the Bluetooth in the car.

“Hey, big bro. Have you and Lex eaten?” Tristan asks when his brother answers.

“You’re already done at Mom and Dad’s?” Surprise comes from Hudson.

“Yeah, wanna grab a bite at Burger Shack?”

“Sure, we were just trying to figure out what to eat. See you soon.” The call ends, and Tristan glances at me.

“You’ll meet my entire family tonight. Great way to break the ice all at once.”

“Uh, yeah.” I nod, looking out the window.

One hundred thousand dollars.

I can do this.

“What were you studying at college before you left?” Tristan asks as his eyes focus on the road.

His profile allows me to appreciate his straight nose and fuller bottom lip. Not that I find those things attractive. No way. Everyone has a nose and lips. There’s nothing special about his.

We’re strictly business partners.

“Computer engineering.”

“Wow, that’s cool.” He nods slowly, pensive. “So, like, website creation and things like that?”

I chuckle quietly. “You don’t need a degree in computer engineering to build a website.”

“Ha, says you, who knows how they work. I can’t even design a cool header on my Facebook page.” He glances at me. “I can work with my hands, but clicking a mouse and trying to get something to stick on some website design is wizardry.”

“Wizardry?” I laugh incredulously.

“Harry Potter-level.”

“Oh, my goodness.” My head hits the headrest on a laugh.

The fact that he even mentioned Harry Potter is cute.

“You’re ridiculous. It’s not that hard and definitely doesn’t require a degree,” I repeat.
