Asking Sage to be my fake girlfriend was the best impulsive decision I’ve ever made. From the short message my father sent last night, he was impressed by her. He almost made it sound like he was surprised I could land a girl like her. I should be offended, but I’ve been told worse to my face, and I need this money. Everything else doesn’t matter.

“How come you didn’t mention Sage before?” Hudson steals the coffee cup I just served.

“Hey!” I hold my hands up.

“I have an open house today, so I need to leave soon. Thanks.” He lifts the mug before taking a sip.

I take another mug and serve coffee, buying myself time to answer his question. I turn to look at him, and he’s sitting on a stool at the counter with raised brows.

“And give up the element of surprise?”

His eyebrows remain raised.

“What?” I question innocently.

“I just think it’s weird you didn’t bring it up.”

“Well, in my defense, you work a lot and spend every free moment you have with Lex.”

“That doesn’t mean—“

“I know,” I cut him off, shaking my head. “We started talking last week, we went out, that’s it. It’s new, and we’re getting to know each other.” Normally, I’d tell Hudson about my plan, but I have a feeling he wouldn’t agree with this one. At least not right away, and I can’t have any negative thoughts breaking into my head.

“She seems nice.”

“She’s great.” I smile, and I mean it.

Sage is fun and smart. Not to mention, she schooled my dad’s friend last night, which made her a real superhero in my eyes.

“What are your plans today?” Hudson looks at me over the top of his mug as he grabs a banana from the fruit bowl.

“Not sure yet. I think I’m going to see Sage.” Although I spent last night with her, I’m ready to see her again, to talk to her.

“Sounds good. I need to go. I’m hoping this open house will be a success and that it doesn’t take forever so I can relax this afternoon.”

“Good luck.” I grab my coffee cup and head to my bedroom, grabbing my phone.

I shoot Sage a message asking at what time she’s free.

Maybe we can get breakfast.

My phone pings with an incoming message as I’m getting dressed. Perfect timing.

Sage: Hey, I just need to run a few errands.

Tristan: I’ll go with you.

Sage: Grocery shopping?

Tristan: Sure. Wanna grab breakfast first? We can talk about this dinner with my parents and I can eat something. Cooking isn’t my forte, and I could really go for a plate of waffles from Good Eats

Sage: Oh, those are good.

Tristan: Let’s go then. I can meet you there soon.

Sage: Fine. Give me like fifteen.
