“Hey,” I say with a smile.

“What’s going on, hot stuff? How was dinner yesterday?” She knew I was going with Tristan since she helped me pick my outfit.

“It was interesting.” I tell her about meeting his parents, the conversation with his dad’s friend, and then dinner with Hudson and Lex

“Whoa, you met the whole family.”

“Yeah, and his parents want us to go over for dinner.” I stop at a red light and rub my eyes.

“That’s a good thing, right?”

“Tristan says so.”

“I’d like to meet this Tristan. From the pictures I found, he looks cute.”

Her comment makes me think back to Tristan’s outburst. It was flirty and natural, something that shouldn’t happen between us.

“Maybe this fake relationship will turn real.” Her voice fills with hope and teasing.

“No,” I shake my head. “I like hanging out with him. As a friend,“ I add.

“You never know.”

“He’ll go back to traveling the world once he has the money and starts his organization. I’ll still be here, trying to figure out my life.”

An ocean isn’t enough distance for me to forget about Tristan, though. He plagues my thoughts like some leaf-eating bacteria. I need more distance. A different planet or universe. Would a light-year be enough for me to forget about him? Not likely.

“You know what I think?”

“Going back to school right now isn’t an option. You know that.”

“It could be once you get that money.” She makes it sound so simple.

“After I pay off my medical bills, I’ll have some left over, but I want to save it for when I need the money, or in case something else happens.”

Unfortunately, my case doesn’t qualify for disability, regardless of the fact that a few years ago, I had a major scare that landed me in the hospital for a week. Debt racked up from that stay. My insurance covered some of it, but not nearly enough. A five-star resort would have cost less and had much better amenities.

“It won’t. That was a false alarm, and you take good care of yourself. Don’t think about that, or I’ll have to go up there and kick your behind,” she says firmly.

“When are you coming?” Other than her quick trip over the Christmas holidays, I haven’t seen Daisy in months.

“I’ll be there over Easter weekend, so buckle up and get ready to introduce me to your boyfriend in two weeks.”

“Oh, boy.”

“That’s right, S. I’ll get to form a first-hand opinion of him and this agreement.”

She laughs when I quietly curse.

“I gotta go, but we’ll talk this week. Keep me posted. By the way, I read this romcom last week that I think you’ll love. It’s about a fake relationship,” she laughs again.

“You’re a jerk.” I stick my tongue out to the phone even if she can’t see me.

“But you love me anyway,” she sings out. “I’ll call you this week.”

“Bye, friend.” I smile softly. Despite her teasing, Daisy is the best friend a girl could ask for. I focus on the road, taking slow and steady breaths.

It’s like my life has turned into a romantic comedy. Soon people are going to break out into song and dance.
