Tristan: Funny girl. Come on over.

Sage: Lol I’ll let you know.

I’ll accept that for now. In the meantime, I walk to the bar to get some information on mocktails. I’m sure the bartender could make any cocktail without alcohol.

“Is she coming?” Ellie’s eyebrows dance on her forehead. “I saw you typing away on your phone.”

I snort at her curiosity. “I don’t know yet.”

She pouts, causing me to laugh.

“You’ll meet her soon enough, if not,” I promise.

“I may have more free time on my hands after my dad’s meeting with a dairy corporation,” Ellie rolls her eyes.

“Your dad actually met with them?” Hope’s eyebrows shoot up.

“I don’t want to talk about it,” Ellie says tightly.

“Right, okay.” Hope nods, looking at Lex with wide eyes.

Before I can ask what’s going on, my phone buzzes.

Sage: I think I’m gonna head home.

Tristan: Why? I asked the bartender and he’ll make you any mocktail you want.

Sage: You asked him that?

Tristan: Of course.

Sage: Wow . . . usually people beg me to drink and tell me one won’t do anything.

Tristan: Well, those people suck. But there’s no reason you can’t have fun without alcohol.

Sage: I agree.

Tristan: So you’ll come?

It isn’t lost on me how hopeful I am. I shouldn’t be. I should’ve let her make her decision and not insisted, but I want to see her.

Sage: Yes, I’ll see you soon you persistent man.

Tristan: Great.

I grin and lean back in my seat, taking a drink. Every few minutes, I look toward the door to see if Sage has walked in. I’m growing anxious. I haven’t seen her in a few days, between some phone calls and video meetings and her work schedule. I couldn’t come up with a real reason to have dinner together that wouldn’t come across as awkward since we aren’t really dating.

“Sage is here,” Lex says, and I turn around to see her walking toward us with a tentative smile.

Standing, I head her way and guide her to our table.

“You guys remember Sage, right? Meet Ellie and Matt,” I say, introducing her.

Matt says hello, but Ellie interrupts him before Sage can respond.

“It’s so nice to meet you. I was a little jealous since everyone else had already met you, and I was left in the dark,” Ellie rambles.

I roll my eyes and look at Sage. “Excuse Ellie. She doesn’t get out much.”
