My head snaps in his direction. I stare at him with bugged eyes. He smiles and winks, thinking he’s got everything under control.

After not seeing him for days, how can he waltz in here as if nothing is wrong? I’ve been thinking about him, wondering how he’s doing. He probably doesn’t think about me outside of our agreement.

“You know, Tristan, I think I like you.” Daisy points a finger at him.

“The best friend’s approval is important.” He gives her a crooked smirk.

He’s such a charmer, and Daisy is falling for it. She’s more of a sheep in wolf’s clothing than the other way around.

I snort and shake my head. When both of them look at me, I cross my arms.

“You guys are ridiculous.”

“Why? Because we’re talking about how amazing you are?” Daisy challenges.

“What’s ridiculous about that? We both agree that you’re fantastic.” Tristan smiles.

“I’m almost done here.” I ignore their comments.

“Great, I’m starving.” Daisy’s coffee and cookie are long gone.

“Are you going to dinner?” He looks between us.

“Yeah,” I nod. “She came in today from DC, so we’re going to hang out.”

“Oh, okay. Cool.” He clears his throat and smiles awkwardly. “Totally cool.” He claps his hands. “So cool.”

My eyebrows tightly pull as I stare at him.

“Do you want to come with us?” Daisy offers.

She looks at me out of the corner of her eye, the question reflecting in them. I shrug in silent response.

“Nah, you ladies have fun. Friend time is important.” He takes a drink of his coffee. “I’ll see you tomorrow.” He stands, taking his coffee cup with him.

Confused by his sudden change in mood, I reach for his arm to stop him.

“Come on. It’ll be fun.” I smile through my befuddled thoughts.

I haven’t seen him in days, and we’ve barely spoken. I wasn’t expecting his body language to scream disappointment.

“Are you sure?” His eyes bounce between mine.

“Yeah,” I smile, releasing his arm.

Tristan looks at Daisy. “Do you mind?”

“Not at all.” She shakes her head with a mischievous smile. “This is going to be a blast.” Her hands rub together like Mr. Burns from The Simpsons.

I take a deep breath and make sure everything is in order before Elizabeth arrives in a few minutes. When she gets to work, and I get ready to leave, my heart is pounding.

As always, to keep with the ruse, Tristan wraps his arm around my shoulder. The cocoon he creates for me is comforting and one I’ll miss when our time together is up. He makes me feel safe and taken care of.

Daisy arches her brow when he does this, but I ignore her and offer a tight smile. Who am I to deny myself the warmth of a man I’ve grown to enjoy being with? Even as nothing more than a partner-in-crime.

“If you tell me nothing is going on, you’re going to offend me. There’s no way I’m buying that, even if it’s a cheap discount.“ Daisy raises her eyebrow and crosses her arms.

“I’m not selling anything.” I roll my eyes, leaning against my car after dinner. She cleverly waited for Tristan to leave, and I wish he were here as a barrier to her questioning.
