Page 67 of Meet Fake

I don’t have much experience in the relationship department. I’ve dated here and there, but nothing serious enough to meet parents.

I take a sip of my drink. This thing with Sage is transforming into something else. I can feel it deep in my bones. I want to take care of her, make sure she’s okay, but I’m not sure it’s possible.

Meeting her parents will complicate things. I don’t want to break her heart when I have to leave again. I definitely don’t want to break my own.

I watch as Sage and Daisy eat nachos and talk. I can’t take my eyes away from her, and it makes me feel selfish.

She hasn’t even looked my way.

What’s wrong with me? I shouldn’t put her in this position. I shake my head and look at my brother and Lex.

“We’re staying at an inn near the venue after the wedding so that we don’t have to drive back into town late at night,” Lex tells me.

“Yeah? That’s a good idea, actually.” Toby and Hope’s wedding is at a historic estate outside of town, up in the mountains.

“You and Sage should consider it. That road is dark and winding,” Hudson says.

“Yeah, I’ll talk to her about it.”

My eyes move to hers, and I catch her looking at me.

Finally!

I smile and nod. She looks away with a frown, which causes my excitement to burst.

My eyes scan back toward Sage’s table, but I don’t see her. Craning my head to get a better look at the table, my stool shakes. Gravity takes over, and I fall forward, landing on my hands and knees. The wooden stool falls against my back.

Ouch.

Laughter echoes around me as I sit back on my heels after Hudson has removed the stool.

“Sorry,” Lex snorts.

Heat consumes me, and I see Daisy looking at me with raised eyebrows. Sage approaches their table and her eyes land on me. They narrow as her brows furrow, and my embarrassment grows.

Standing, I shake off my jeans and my pride and sit on the stool again.

“That’s what happens when you’re nosy.” Lex’s lips quirk.

“Not nosy,” I grit out.

“Obsessed?” Hudson asks.

“Nope.” I stare into my drink.

I’m neither of those things, but I am a man with growing feelings for his fake girlfriend.

“Can we order something to eat? I’m hungry,” Lex says.

“Let me guess. You didn’t have a snack between classes?” Hudson lifts a brow and looks at Lex.

“Whatever.” She rolls her eyes.

We came here as soon as Lex finished up at the dance studio, so I can imagine she’s hungry.

“Yeah, I could go for some food.” I look through the short menu.

After we order some nachos and wings, Lex looks at me, her hands steepled. I lift my brows, waiting for her to say something.
