Had I told them the truth from the beginning, we wouldn’t be having this conversation. But I knew Hudson and Lex would talk me out of this plan. And I can’t afford that.

“Surprise her with her favorite food and a romantic setup, and you’ll be golden.” Hudson winks, squeezing Lex’s shoulder.

She shoves him away, shaking her head.

“Don’t listen to him. Talk things out. Food doesn’t solve everything.“ She glares at my brother.

“You forgave me.” He points out.

“I forgave you because I love you and knew we had to fight for our chance.” She gives him a pointed look.

I stare at them with a mixture of joy and annoyance. Lucky them. I’m glad they’re happy, honest to God, but I can’t help but feel a bit envious of how easy they make it seem.

I shake myself and grab a nacho. I need to get out of my own head.

“I’m sure if you guys talk, you’ll figure it out. You make a good couple. I could tell right away that you’ve got something special.”

Yeah, a fake relationship. Super special.

I nod and remain quiet before my sour mood gets me in trouble. It’s clear Sage and I need to talk, but not for the reasons Lex thinks.

I reach for my phone and type out a message while Lex and Hudson discuss some details about Hope and Toby’s wedding.

Tristan: Hey Sage, I’m sorry again for overreacting earlier. I trust you to know what’s good for you.

Sage: It’s ok.

Tristan: Do you really mean that, or are you brushing me off?

Sage: I’m tired, Tristan. I wanna go to bed.

Tristan: So early?

Sage: Yes. Am I allowed to?

Tristan: I do enjoy your sarcasm. Of course you’re allowed to do what you want. Can we talk tomorrow? Maybe have coffee or lunch?

Sage: I work.

Tristan: Right. After?

Sage: Sure.

I breathe out and tip my head back. I don’t like the way this conversation went. Sage sounds short, even via text message. Tomorrow can’t get here soon enough. I’m going to show up at The Bean and make her see that I’m still the same guy, and hopefully, we can overcome this awkward stage.

First, you need to figure out what you want and if that includes her.

Be quiet, conscience.

I shake that thought away and focus on the moment, but I won’t be able to avoid that thought for long.

Tristan

My gait is slow as I head toward the coffee shop, a wide yawn taking over. I stumble as I almost crash into someone, mumbling an apology. My eyes sting, and I catch the bags under my eyes in the reflection of a parked car.

“You look horrible,” I tell myself before continuing down the street.
