“Really?” I arch a brow.

“No.” She narrows her eyes playfully and shakes her head. “But I do feel okay.”

“Good.” I blow out a breath.

When I returned to her house the second day and saw she was still feeling sick, I started to worry even more. What if it was something worse?

“Do you want coffee? Because you know you need to stand in line. I can’t go playing favorites.” Her smile lights up her face, and I begin to relax, seeing that she’s herself.

I chuckle and stand. “I guess we can’t have others telling your boss that you treat me differently.”

“Exactly.” She eyes me with curiosity and a sly grin.

She’s already serving my black coffee despite me not having ordered yet. Julie smiles at me and charges the coffee. When I finish paying, my cup is already placed in my spot.

“Thanks.” I wink at her.

With Sage being sick, we haven’t been able to finalize some of the details about the wedding tomorrow. I never booked a room at the inn like Hudson and Lex. It didn’t feel right without asking her.

I watch her work for a bit while I drink my coffee. I’m not sure if coming here today was a good idea, but I wanted to keep an eye on Sage. She says she’s okay, but I think an extra day of rest would’ve been smart, especially since today is Friday and she’s off tomorrow for the wedding. When I told her as much, she got upset, saying she needs to feel like herself again, and work provides that. I understand what she means.

Watching her interact with customers, with Julie, all smiles, I can see how good this job is for her.

Me? I’m not sure how good I am for her.

I still feel guilty about the flare-up. This entire situation must be causing her more stress than I expected. It was never my intention for her to be worried about doing this.

I scrub a hand down my face and sigh. We still have a couple of weeks to go, and I’m scared something will happen to her again.

“Are you okay?” Sage asks, her hands gripping the edge of the counter.

“Yeah.” I smile. “You? All good?”

“Yes.” She nods slowly and exaggeratedly. “I’m fine, Tristan, promise.”

She does a little shake to prove her point, but all that does is make my blood race. I want to be free to hold her, dance with her, kiss her.

“You don’t look okay.” She points a finger at me accusingly.

“I am.” I roll my eyes playfully to break the tension.

Sage tilts her head, reading me. I sit straight and unmoving, hoping she doesn’t see the turmoil in my head.

“Okay,” she finally says. “I got some amazing news when I came in today.”

“What is it?” I tilt my head and raise my brows.

She looks around and leans forward.

“Elizabeth asked if I’d rebuild her website as a side job,” she whispers.

“Really? That’s amazing.” I smile wide, pride streaming through me.

She tucks her lips into her teeth and nods. Her eyes round with happiness.

“You wouldn’t happen to have told her about my background in computer engineering, right?” She arches an eyebrow intimidatingly.

“No.” I lean my head in surprise. “I’ve never spoken to her.”
